I like the idea of the filter rollers. Back in the day I had filter socks and was not a fan of changing them out. Is any one using a sump with a filter roller built in? I know trigger systems and Geo have good reputations and have the roller built in. When I look at the cost, its a couple of hundred bucks more for an integrated system.

Thanks for the feed back. I figured if I buy a trigger sump for $450 and the Klir for 300 or Clarisea for 400. I’m almost at $750-850. And the trigger platinum and geo afr are $990-950.

There is a fellow, just got one of the larger models, 10" filter roll.
Just stripped the gear that turns the roller.

I have a Geo’s Roller Sump and I love it! I would recommend it if you can swing it.
I saw your build thread. Looks very nice. Ideally I would get the roller filter sump with the refugium like you have. But the tank I was looking at is 36", so the space under the stand is less than 34". That means if I get the Geo 30 with the roller filter I can't get the refugium

You could always plumb an external Algae Turf Scrubber or similar device. I ended up with a sump that filled most of my cabinet. I have had to get creative with all the other filters.

I have the GEO AFR sump and love it. I appreciate the integrated design as it helps with clearance in my stand, which is limited with vertical space.

My few comments on it is that the roll mat section itself is not removable, which mean cleaning that section when doing deep sump clean ups is just slightly more difficult, but you probably don't need to be doing this all that often. Also, I would try and ask if GEO can add a second heater holder in the return section so you can have two. My single heater wasn't enough so I have to put a second one in the skimmer section, which works but isn't pretty and I paid $$$ for a nicer sump (: but everything is 2020 in hindsight

What tank do you have?

Hello Variant

I am the planning stage and putting together a list of equipment. I really like the filter roller concept. And the integrated sump/roller filter really has me thinking. How do you like Geo? The trigger systems looks cool too. I can fit the Geo afr 30 under the stand. But i really want a refugium. So I’m not sure if I should go with a Geo afr or another sump with fuge and add the Clarisea or Klir. Any thoughts ??

I really like the GEO in terms of quality and functionality. Unfortunately, this is one of those things where you need to figure out what is most important to you and decide what best meets your goals.

I can however tell you that I've thought about refugiums during my tank build (I have a custom build shallow tank). My interest in refugiums was driven in large part by my curiosity of of the triton method. After a lot of thinking, I realized a fuge wasn't for me because it was one additional piece of maintenance I'd have to do.

You have to pull out or trim algae in a fuge and clean the section over time. But that isn't to say a roller doesn't have any maintenance. You still have to replace rolls once in a while. For me, I wasn't able to fit a giant fuge where I could do algae removals every 4-6 weeks like I am with a roller. On top of that, changing a roll doesn't really impact your tank chemistry much, it's business as usual. With a fuge, when you trim back algae, you directly impact the rate at which nutrients is removed from the water (smaller algae ball = less nutrient uptake).

But the debate of roller mat versus refugium is a debate currently without an objective endings with data to support any conclusion. My theoretical thought exercise resulted in me ditching a fuge and going for a roller. Your own thought exercise might end up with a different conclusion.

Hope this helps...

The Bubble Magus Roller is a cheap alternative! The normal price of 179.99 its hard to beat in my opinion. Replacement rolls are like 20 bucks too. I bought one during black friday for $119! Say you got standard tank with baffle kit, $120 and then add this roller; maybe $350 total for all the equipment and incidental parts together and you have a roller mat sump. Pretty good deal if you ask me!
