I’ve had this pipefish that I love for 3 weeks now constantly added pods ….today out of nowhere he’s laying on the rocks not hunting….no other fish is annoying him almost looks like he’s breathing hard…I know this fish is hard to take care of but I’m really trying to keep him alive any ideas ?! Parameters are fine all other fish are healthy ..,

Pipefish are very, very finicky eaters. I've tried twice but can't seem to keep the little guys alive for any length of time.

They will occasionally lay on rocks, but if they're also not eating, etc. it's generally not a good sign. You could try some frozen food like Calanus - but it may not make any difference at this point.

I had a blue stripe for a while but it died after the temperature dropped rapidly in my tank. I usually just let it feed on pods that were in the tank and every few months I’d add pods. I never really noticed mine laying down during the day but it wouldn’t really explore the tank until my blues came on. I’d just keep a close eye and try not to stress it out. I don’t think I ever witnessed mine hunting pods and I had it for a good 6-7 months

I see him picking at the tank wall this morning now come home he’s looking hurt atleast you got 6 months I only got 3 weeks and this is weirdly my favorite fish;(

Any changes to the tank in the last few days?
Added a flame angel 2 days ago that’s been beefing with my blue hippo(nothing serious) the tang is just showing it’s his tank imo…, but nothing that affects him…and even when they been fighting it’s not every minute it’s just when they cross paths

Really wanna keep this guy alive I’m considering a dip? I never dipped a fish in 8 years
can we get picks?
I just left again for work sadly but you can tell he’s breathing heavy I’ll be back in a hour if he’s still alive .,..been in this hobby 8 years even tho it’s my first pipefish (didn’t know you could even buy them) I don’t think he’s making it

How long has the tank been running and when did you last throw pods in?
Tanks been up for a year ….I put pods in 3 days ago then 4 days before that …,you can see him eating them …then I added live brine shrimp n idk what he was eating from them but something they were dropping?? Perhaps eggs ? Bc he would pick at something when those shrimps go in

Probably not a bad idea but not sure he would have breezed through pods that quick. My tank was 20 gallons and it had been up for about 4 months and I only had to add pods every few months
I do have a coris wrasse who loves pods as well but he’s tiny

Vibrio fortis is semi common in our tanks and usually causes issues with pipefish and seahorses. I didn't think anything of it until I had my biome tested through @AquaBiomics which showed that this virus was present in my tank. Which probably was the reason my dragon face had some issues and ultimately died.

This is interesting bc I saw him doing a weird shake mituoj

Interesting …can you tell me what symptoms he was having ? I noticed mine do like a shake every few days like a mini seizure but I thought he was doing this to find pods bc he would eat right after

He was doing this shake or twitch thing randomly since the day I got him just thought it was maybe something they do

All pods sold out at lfs he’s not doing good I turned off lights hoping it would help
