I have no complaints with the 200 micron filter rolls that is standard. Any plans to make 50-100 micron rolls? Maybe swap out a roll of 50 micron once in a while to polish the water?

Which fleece roller do you have? I have Bubble Magus and been testing 50microns and 80 microns filter from this place. They have different levels and will cut to size.

The material isn't the same as most of the OE! I think they are coolant paper but it is working OK for me so far.

Very strange! I searched but Redsea only has the material rated as 50 g/m2 for the filter roll. I have no idea what is the equivalent Microns.
Anyhow, from my researches, most fleece rollers use 50 microns rolls

The Red Sea 500/1200 rolls are both 200 microns. Some dealers list this, but BRS just did a ReefMat video yesterday where they also indicated the fleece roll was 200 microns (presumably to strike a balance between filtration level and consumption).

Wow, really? I am testing the 80microns material right now and the consumption rate appears to be 1/3 of the BM 50 microns. I guess it is too bad since most filter socks are 100-300 microns

The tricky thing about the fleece filter is that it needs to push a lot of water through a relatively short length of material. I had a closer look at the fleece under a microscope, here it is.

You can see the interwoven fibres which makes up the 35micron (or whatever micron rating) of the fleece. On the other hand, it is clear that the material has stamped out holes with magnitude of millimeters.

So what gives? For a low micron filter, fairly unpressurised, it cannot handle the flow requirements of our dt-sump flowrate. Therefore a bypass is already built in.

In practice, this is how the spent fleece looks like.

So I suppose, if you were to use a lower micron fleece, you would probably need more bypass. It can still polish the water, no problem. Just that it will take a few more turn over to do it, and use up more fleece in the process.

Here is what the 50 microns BM roller (bottom) vs the 80 microns coolant roller (Top). I think the coolant paper might do a better job at absorbing the dark/yellowish stuffs from the water column.

Honestly I can't remember the magnification.

Your observation really showed it's not just the micron number, but the actual weave of the fleece which matters.

It does suck. Had a 1st gen, went through all kinds of motor and optical switch issues, went to a bubble magus, not as fancy but does the job.

IIRC, klir uses 50 micron. I've tried every fleece brands media out there, thats made for a 4" width, lol.

Got the Di-4.
Had it jam up once before. I think the roller mechanism just isn't too strong. Guess it's a good thing in a way as it wont tear it, but a pain also if it gets stuck.
