So I live out in what seems to be an overall aquarium dead spot.

Nearest store is a big box with nothing special. There's one or two small stores within an hour, but not much selection. After that you are going 2-3 hours minimum.

I have an additional building that used to be used to make cheese before we bought the house and property that I have finally started cleaning out. I would love to share the hobby and put it to work as well, but have questions.

Any retailers out there open and willing to answer some questions?

I have seen some locals with tanks, including SW, but everything is small, and they all say the same thing. There's nothing around.

Needs work but I think it could be awesome.

Im not a retailer. If you have the time and resources get a couple nice frag tanks and go for it.
It will take awhile to get it going.
Focus on what your local people want to give you an idea of the market.

Always remember it becomes work at some point.

This one?

I think it takes the right reasons to want to start an LFS. That guy seemed extremely naive to a lot of things, and admitted he wanted a LFS just so that he can get 1st pick at livestock. To me, that's more of a pipe dream, a classic case of wanting your cake and eating it too. Completely the wrong way to go about it. "Let me go 1/4 million in debt so that I can get that $300 fish for $100".

I've heard this phrase many times, and it seems to hold truth, "How do you make a small fortune owning a LFS? Start with a large fortune."

Yep, just found it.

I am aware of the overhead and finances, which is why I asked the question. I wanted to talk to someone in the business and really understand how they are staying afloat. I love the hobby and want to see it accessible to more, but for example, it almost impossible to get anything over a 40 gallon tank around here without ordering it online.

Welcome!

Thanks all. And hello from central ny.

Just curious what triggered since I've been a member since 2019?
The orange “Hello” tag. Usually for new members.
In my area, reefing businesses are usually into freshwater and sometimes reptiles too. Reefing is highly seasonal in most areas, and the summer months are usually slow.

Welcome to your new home for saltwater reef aquarium resources and fun! Welcome to the family! :D

Probably because you posted in the "Meet & Greet" forum. That's typically where new members introduce themselves.
