It's pretty easy actually, once you read into it. A simple quarantine tank can be set up for >$100.
A heavy duty plastic bin, of whatever dimensions are appropriate. Using a second aquarium is better, but also more expensive.
Sponge Filter. Seed the sponge either from your DT filter, or some bottled bacteria.
Heater.
Lights. If it's fish, they only need a light cycle, can use any old bulb, I use two clip on work lamps with blue and white bulbs. Corals would require appropriate lighting.
PVC fittings for fish to hide in.
That is it really. You put them in there (pro tip, match the water in the QT with the water in the bag so you can skip drip acclimation and just float for 30 minutes for temp). Some will say prophylacticly treat with meds, others will say observe and treat if issues show up. 2-4 weeks is the usual for Fish. 76+ days for rock, coral, inverts, anything that could have ich tomonts.
