I was able to realign some finances and am able to keep the 135g tank I bought earlier in the year. I'll be setting it up into a mixed reef this summer/fall.

I've read alot of horror stories of hitchhikers from live rock and really want to avoid those problems if possible. I'd like to give making some DIY live rock a go. Does anybody have some nice pink/purple coralline they can spare?

It takes awhile to cure DIY live rocks. It would be a lot easier and faster to get some dry lace/base rocks to get a tank established. I am sure that some of us can chip off some coraline off our glass although most of it is going to be powdery and be blown away. Coraline will grow on your base rocks pretty fast if you seed your base rocks with a live rock that is well coated with collarine algae.

I can lift out my overflow and scrap some off. It's caked on. Or I can trade a purple rock for a regular one and you can dip it. Assuming dip doesn't kill Coraline.

perhaps you could give a hunk of your diy rock to someone to "season" in their tank. Of course after you have aged it.

Or just a hunk of a busted up concrete block.

Thanks for the tips guys, I hope to experiment with some different mixes this month and will update as they cure.

Hey guys, finally got my tank up and cycling.... I ended up ordering some dry rock from reefrocks and aquascaping with that. I am lucky in that I have a large industrial diamond chop saw at my place of work and was able to cut alot of the dry rock up to make some nice overhangs. I'll post pics in a build thread when I get my stand skinned and lit(diy leds).

I resurrected this thread in the hopes I could trade someone here some of my leftover dry rock for some of their coralline covered rock. Some of the pieces I have are already cut into flat shelf pieces if anyone needs something like that.
