A few years ago, wavemakers seemed all the rage. I don't hear so much about them now. But it seems like setting up a wave for a few minutes a couple times a day would be a good thing.

Everyone is now switching back to Borneman surges, the new rage.. just kidding.
yep most people run wave makers , not so many closed loops these days.

Tunze makes Wavebox, but you can make standing wave with many other DC controllable devices like Ecotech Marine Vortechs.

I currently run 6. Cant do without them.

what size tank is it ? ya you can get a pump that will do waves and only one in a tank,,,, you can get more than one as well... will depend on your tanks dimmensions, and your rockwork as to how many ,, there are literally tons of options these days.

What brands and how do you use them ? They just sit at the top of the tank ? No powerheads, just one wavemaker per tank ?
I have large powerheads on each end and wavemakers along the back as i have mixed reef with much added SPS and giving them Max flow

I can't get much of a wave in my tank. The footprint is 4'x8' and about 3' deep. I have 4 columns of 3 Jebao PP-20 pumps positioned about 1' from the corners on the 4' side. I control them with an Arduino. I pulsed all the pumps on one side between 1 second to 2.2 seconds in 1/5 second increments. The most action I got was 1.2 seconds so I tried 1.3 seconds. The surface bobbed up and down a little but not much bulk water movement. I used the same off time as run time while pulsing the pumps.

I also tried pulsing all the pumps on one side then the other side, which got me nowhere.

Any suggestions?

I run 2 - One in my nano SPS reef and one in my 4’ mixed reef. All my corals love them! My SPS react the best with a wave maker as opposed to a single power head.
For water movement in a 3’ tank that is rather hard, you’ll likely find you’ll have to run 2 wave makers either side. One towards the bottom and one at the top on both sides. This will also create a great amount of surface tension ontop of the current underneath :)
