So, I realize the thread title may give you a little unintedned imagery, sorry for that. I recently took my maxima and squamy out for a good scrubbing. There really was a lot of crap built up on them that I wanted gone. Those little tube worms that cast out webs were irritating surrounding corals are now all gone.

Anyone else take clams out for a scrub down?

Not generally but if I do see a build up of stuff then I will if they are easily removed from the live rock.

In the wild, clams live in and on corals and right up next to anemones, and are COVERED in sponges, tube worms, etc, and they're none the worse for wear. In addition, they are almost immune to the sting of nematocysts, so corals and nems being right up next to them won't bother them, and as long as there isn't a boring sponge that will break down their shell, they're fine.

This, but if they are well-attached (which is almost always the case with crocea and maxima), just leave them be! Don't stress them out by trying to move them.

All of my croceas (( have 4 of them, with one being with me for at least 8 years )) are on the sandbed, so it makes it easy to remove them. Been slacking a bit with the water changes on my 40 breeder, and the current clean up crew consists of me, so I have scrubbed those two a few times recently. Besides the shells looking cleaner, the clams didn't show any changes.

My clams are attached to bases and are easy to remove. I've taken mine out several times to remove vermited snails. Once I had grape caulerpa growing on my maxima and I took it out once a week to remove the algae until it stopped growing on it. So yes I clean my clams from time to time and have been doing it for years.

I've got an issue where my tank took a plummet while I was away in china. Coraline grew on the area of my clam that is usually bone while and the clam sticks it's mantle over. Now my perams are fixed but my clam pretty much never fuly comes out. Any ideas?
