Anyone else done with mp40s

I've had great luck with the slw20 & slw30 on the powerheads. I'm currently using a pair of Nero 5's that may be for sale soon as I just ordered a pair of the MLW20's model for my display.

I do dig the Nero, but I don't plan to invest into Ai's ecosystem, so no real point to keep the pumps. I balked at the coin to drop on two Nero 5's, so I can only imagine the cost for two MP40's and to have to replace wet sides so often. I'd prolly kick something hard, lol.

Does anybody like Tunze pumps anymore? You can hide the pump, it can come with a wavemaker and photosensor option, they run forever even when neglected and abused. Guess they dont have that whole no cords in the tank thing though.

What model jebao is everyone talking about?

Im glad i read this thread ive been looking for some used ones as i dont know if i want to buy 2 or 3 mp40 at that price.

I'm looking for some decent powerheads though alternative to mp40
This is one I bought love it easy to clean as well

I was lucky to get a couple mp10s used for cheap. I like my mp10's, but the magnets are annoyingly weak for me on 3/8 acrylic. Have to get them just right to catch and hold, but still fall on occasion. I know I could support them with zip ties, but I'll more than likely replace them.
My dad has a older pair of the mp10's with the white controller, they have worked great and we got them used at a normal used price. Most folks selling these used swear they cost gold. Imho it's something that's been wet in a saltwater aquarium, it's not worth more than 50% after the warranty's gone.

I do for the quality, but the sometimes oddity of needing a part (especially if not internet savy) and the upfront cost for something's can be a turn off. The skimmers are bar none, especially for a AIO setup.

I have Tunze and MPs. I don't hate my MPs but I love my Tunzes.

I am back to the hobby after 25 plus years, I have 3 power heads that are at least 32 years old two of which are in my tank now, one in the DT and one in my sump, I supplemented the DT with two $23 new pumps.
After the tank was up and running I started looking into the New Fangled controlled units. I saw and immediately loved the MP series of heads, loved the fact that the wet side and dry side were on opposite sides of the glass and the wire was out of view.
Then I saw the price tag, I laughed my tail off, I would need 4 at about $1600.
Then I saw the number of issues some folks were having with these units and there is no warranty.

Yeah, this is why people buy cheap knock offs. I would love to buy All American just not at the end of a gun where all my money is gone with no warranty.

A year in, my two cheap heads and my old heads are working just fine... and I still have my $1600.00 in my pocket lol

Love to see one of those heads in 32 yrs lol

What do you love about the tunzes? Was thinking of replacing the mp10s with some streams.
They are silent, reliable, have lots of control options for syncing or pulsing, waves, lots of sizes that work on any glass thickness up to 1 inch with the correct magnet, aimable, the battery back up (safety connector) allows you to use any battery you wish and is a reasonable price, good warranty (not that you are likely to need it), the cord is a useable length 5 meters (especially important for larger tanks... I could go on and on.

I have 5 mp-40 on my tank. I have only had one issue with the magnet swelling and contacted them and they replaced it for free. All have been running strong for two plus yrs. Ps all of them where purchased used. And they still replaced the wet side for free. Can’t ask for better service if you ask me.

I have never understood how someone can pay 400+ dollars for a wavemaker.

I felt the same way for the past 10 years, but then I got some on my new 180 1.5 years ago. I only use 2 MP40's.

Not having wires in the tank is a big deal to me. The inside of the tank looks much less cluttered. Spend all this money getting a sump to keep equipment out of view, only to fill the tank with wires and power heads that stick out further etc. I figured on the new build I would give them a try.

That is the entire draw for me. The controller stuff I really don't care about, and they are ridiculously overpriced. I'll quickly switch to something else once they get real competition.

It will be hard to ever put wires or bulky powerheads back into the tank though.

You can’t really compare a black cord showing to a small size aquarium (sump) in open view

I do like the mp40 cordless wire look. But I agree with 90% of people that they are expensive.

Im with you. If I need a reliable pump, gettin' a Tunze. I have 3 that are all over 10 years old and work great. If i need more flow in the big tank, I'll probably get 2 of the big streams, hide em in rocks and sleep well knowing they're plugging along doing their job without being fussy.

I've had one of those big stream pumps. Had it hidden in the rocks.
They need to be cleaned often also if you want them to last.
Needless to say..... Getting them out and back in place was a real hassle. Sold it for that reason.
Good pump for sure. I'm happy with my MP 40's.
Besides the Streams cost just about as much.

I have two of the stream3 pumps, one has been running since March 2019 and I have never touched it, not once. My second is was started in my new tank in May 2021 so not long. I have not cleaned that one either.

My little Streams get the inlets brushed off once in a bluemoon while they are still in the tank.

Not best practice. Just my experience, with my tanks.

I only clean my MPs when they turn purple. That is really only because I want to inspect the magnets for damage. Something that I don't need to worry about with the Tunzes.

MPs do service more easily for sure.

Some of the Tunzes can cost as much or even more than the vortecs. Sometimes you actually get what you pay for.

My $0.02

It's another one of those threads.
Just pick your poison. If you're happy then it's good. If not change to something else. Find what works and stick with it. Some people are going to love this and hate that. The others will be mostly opposite. Kinda why there's so many options out there.

Exactly, if you are picking your poison for your larger tank (lets say maybe 320 total system gallons that is maybe around 7 feet long) you may want to check out this video promoting some of the features of MPs

Here you can watch the MPs fail before they even get wet.

Waterbox Aquariums' video from the YouTubes. The good stuff starts at 6:29. Oops, well I guess we will just settle for not being able to reach the control board on the other side of the tank... I guess the cord is too short. We will just stick the controller on the back and call it good.
EP05 | Electrical and Cable Management on the REEF LX 320.7. A Guide to Large Reef Aquariums
I find this especially funny because earlier in this series they go on and on about how this control board was a collaboration between Waterbox and their equipment sponsors. Its the best, most well conceived control board. Too bad the controller can't reach.

Tunze has a 5 meter cord. Very thoughtful.

So sick of replacing wet sides on my mp40s. Never again will I buy these dang things. I won’t even sell them to anyone else because I would feel bad they would need new wet sides every 6-10 months ridiculous for the price of wetsides I can buy jeboas yearly and not bother cleaning them. Rant over but seriously anyone else done.
Betting you didn't do routine maintenance of pulling, soaking in 5% Vinegar, then scrubbing with a toothbrush

Do that and you'll get 3 years

.

Got over two years on two of my Nero 5s, not one problem. The other two are a year and a half. Clean em once every few months, maybe 3? lol
