just curious to see who else out here is running open uv in their sump

Having it without the housing will drastically reduce, if not completely render it ineffective. Also you should never look at the light directly, as eye damage may occur. Very serious! Also the electrical connections on most units should never be exposed to water. Unplug it and remove it before you get shocked.

Open uv? The purpose of been close it's to maximize the effect and to protect from uv radiation.
Why should anyone do that?
