Anyone ever buy a gyre and regret it?

I really wanna buy a Red Sea gyre but I am afraid I’ll have buyers remorse.

I also like the idea that for a 40g FOWLR it’s one and done.

I also notice that if gyres were everything they said they were all of you would have them.

People like different things, personally I would only run gyres, but I am only one person. I do not like vortechs, but it is your tank not mine.

while I do not use it for my display tank, I do use it in a 40 breeder QT Tank.

Hmmm. See I can justify spending $400 (Canadian, it works out to be the same as USD) on one pump that will do it all.

But I can’t justify a Vortech for a FOWLR. Especially because I’d end up needing two.

I also love the Red Sea controller. I’m gonna have to look up how to clean it.

Also considering getting a gyre.. I saw BRS just soaking the pumps in a bucket on the side of the tank Seems like that would be easy enough but maybe im underestimating how many parts there are in these pumps?
Hopefully more people chime in

I plug my 2x tunze 6095 widestream in and my ecotech MP10 and forget about them. Love them. I clean them once a year when coralline gets to dense.

No problem cleaning mine, I do not find it difficult at all.

I had 3 never again. Pain to clean. One died. Motor went out a little over a year. Second one the locked up. When I serviced it found the shaft broke. The last one is still going strong but 1 out of 3. Not good.

Why would you need 2 vortechs?

If it's just a fowler, get a few JAEBOs (to go cheap) and be done with it. For a fowler I would personally spend a little more and get to two powerful Tunze's and have the current rip. Fish love playing in the current.

I have had 2 gyre pumps. For a year I had one of the first generation ones running and then a year later got a newer version of it (it's been so long I cannot remember the names of them).

Pros: They both had good flow, laminar flow did a great job of lifting up hidden detritus, and I liked that I could put them close to the top of tank without sucking in air.

Cons: The bushings on mine wore out very frequently--had to replace them every 3 months or so. Like others, I hated cleaning them and they got dirty fast. Needed to clean every 2-3 weeks to really keep them running well. The first time I went to do a full disassemble and clean of the newer version and it would not come apart. I ended up snapping a part off while trying to disassemble. The pump went into the box of dead equipment (still in that box in the basement--so much for spring cleaning). I threw in the towel on them at that point. I am now using the Nero 5s and love them. I do have the guards on them so small critters don't get sucked in the back.

Been using gyres for over 2 years now. Cleaning them is easy, imo. Never had a bushing wear out on me yet. 2 icecap 3k and 2 Maxspect xf350s in use right now.

mare your fish happy?

Two xf330's and two mp40's controlled through the Hydros wave engine and love both. Cleaning the gyres can be simple. I bought extra impellers and cages, which for two gyres was slightly higher than one mp40 wetside. Takes less than 10 minutes to swap them out and brush off the motor.
