I am considering trying out different salt but have an established 2yr+ system. .does anyone know how this would effect my tank if at all?...using aquavitro salinty right now but alk been testing lower and had couple bad buckets contemplating switch to TM classic as have semi close parameters or supposed to anyways ...any thoughts/experiences??

it would have no effect, mine is changed constantly, at 100% each time, with all forms of salt. the lfs selects which they buy and I do 100% water changes on 10 yr old system only because its small

at any given month im on kent, esv, oceanic, coralife, IO, RC etc. don't even know what the current is, kent I do think per last asking. im not having to dose much, so I don't mind whatever the levels are. one mix's higher alk vs another's lower isn't impactful, only to the alk you might add. how they actually mix up wont kill any corals.

all salt mixes mix up differently, and each coral tolerates this variance. its your dosings that must alter after each change. whether the tank is swapped whole or in part doesn't matter if temp and salinity are matched.

What kind of corals do you keep as i have mixed reef mostly sps and the parameter changes are what worries me but thats one reason i am contemplating the switch is because after i do a 20 gal water change my alk drops down .5 or so and id rather be replenishing a little if not just maintaining. ..this good so far though i found guy who selling his brand new bucket of TM for $40 so for price i think i may give it a try

I think ive switched salts 5 different times. Depending on the alk and traces, start with 10% water changes so you dont bother anything
Any reason for changing or just because ?...also was there one you tried that you particularly like or still trying them out?

I will note ....i try emphasis on TRY to keep my alk around 8-8.5 range and cal 420-440

This whole time on all my tanks i use esv every 2 months to do a 50% change. Ok so in this order on a new build not my existing ones . started with rscp everything was doin fine for 4 months so i tritoned tested and tested really really high for aluminum and manganese. Switched to regular io witch brought my calc down to around 380 so now im using reef crystals. I have a box a fritz that ive ben trying but i might stick with esv and regular io

Esv is around 450calc and 8.5 alk and 1400 mag but its really expensive and for me i love water changes and i go threw a 200 gallon boxs about 2 month s, but for io i can get 2 boxes for the price of 1 box of esv

Is esv that multi part salt mix?how much does cost?.on average tm and aquavitro salinity cost @80 a bucket that does 200gal for tm and 225 on aquavitro but the aquavitro mixes up to 1.026 sg

Yes 4 part salt . supposedly now they only have 100 gallon buckets (i think are around $60 )containing the 4 parts. But the 200 gallon would come in 2 boxes (i pay $100)

Yeah i thought so ...had somebody tell me about it a while back... seen the 4parts as a bit intimidating but was said its an extremely consistent salt mix..have you tested fresh salt mix are numbers above what you get and is advertised everytime?....that be a bummer about no more 200 gal buckets and it is a bit more than average

I mean when it comes to calc alk and mag its basically how you want to mix it. Only thing ive tryed beside using the directions is tweaking a bit of part b to have my alk around 9. The inconsistently comes when you measure it out wrong but after a while youll get the hang of it. Yea bummer right, my crew told me they cant order the 200 gallon boxes nomore so well see

So you can adjust you params via how much of the parts of salt you use?..if i read that right

When you used instant ocean did you test any freshmix and if so what did it test out at?..did seem consitent ...this was another consideration i had i know its a cheaper salt but they been around for so long and alot of people use it

Im no chemist but its 2 dry parts sodium chloride Nd magnesium sulfate (witch you can prob tweak) and if i add more of part b i get a higher alk (not recommended) so part a is maybe calc? Good question i never tested to see what the changes are and ive ben using esv for a long long time

Acually regular Io isnt that bad with inconsistency. If i remmeber correctly alks around 10,calc 380, mag 1300... Reef crystals is kinda inconsistent batch by batch but in the range of 11-12 alk. Calc runs from 440 -480. Mag 1300-1400. Rscp lately is terrible really disappointed, i have 3 open buckets and they are all off and alk is around 12.5 witch is suicide for me while calc is 360 and mag is 1250.... Let me point out everything is done with conductivity probe and refract. I dont roll the buckets, ill take the bag of salt out and roll it around to make sure i dry mixed correctly

insults happen here

its a fun testbed because it exceeds coral to gallon ratio in a bizarre manner. anything in reefing that causes mini cycles, chem insults, detritus diaper storage, anything we want to surmise that a large tank would do after 5+years, we can model in one of these in a year. wchanges totally included.

Thanks man for the info ...maybe should try playing with the esv a lil bit and see what come up with can only leaen from it i guess and sounds like you should be pretty familiar with how that salt is
