i was thinkin of turning my penguin 350 filter into a fuge. anyone got any to spare???? a gallon bag full would be most appreciated.

It's been a while since I've used a penguin filter but if I remember correctly Dave is right, you won't get even close to a full gallon of chaeto inside that open area.

It's important to remember that macroalgae is used to export nutrients by allowing it to suck up some nutrients which encourage it's GROWTH. You then essentially export those nutrients when you trim back the chaeto thus giving it more room to grow again and suck up more nutrients. Taking a small space and packing it full of a macroalgea likley won't give you much benefit becuase it won't have much room to grow. Chaeto growth will be stunted if it doesn't have room to grow out. If it doesn't grow then it also doesn't use up the nutrients your trying to limit. Many people are under the false impression that just having chaeto packed into a sump or lit area that it will magically suck up nutrients. That's only partially true because the macroalgae only sucks up those nutrients if it's allowed to grow.

A good plan for you may be to use a small amount in the filter area and put in just enough chaeto to fill the space HALF full. When it grows to the point at which the space is filled up then take it all out and only put back in enough to fill the space HALF full again.

Spike (aquabucket) used chaeto very cleverly in his tank. He put the chaeto inside the DT behind the rockwork where it wasn't invading any coral or fish space. It was in back where it would still get light but not be right out in the open either.
