Hello All,

I decided on a Kole tang for my next addition to my tank and called my LFS Saturday because it’s about a half hour away and they didn’t have any in stock. My wife was preparing for company and I figured she could use a break so I decided to head to my LFS with my 16 month old anyways. When we arrived I was just looking around not expecting to buy anything and stumbled upon a Flame Tail Tomini Tang, after some quick research with my son in one arm and my phone in another I discovered it was a great tang for my 90 gallon and one of the most recommended tangs for smaller tanks. In comparison to the Kole Tang I had many years ago I find the Flame Tail better looking as well so I am super pumped about this addition and want to make sure I give it great care. I have had no luck getting it to eat nori yet but it eats mysis like crazy. The nori just ends up kind of breaking down on the clip so after hours of leaving it in I pull it out for fear or raising my nitrates and phosphates. Just sharing my find and would love any helpful care tips!

Picture for reference, mine is only about three inches at the moment.

Hello! The bristletooth tangs like tomini and koles tend to eat a lot less algae than the larger species such as zebrasoma in my experience.
Algae based frozen foods are a pretty healthy option that they will usually readily accept.

Those guys are face down grazers. Try it rubber banded to a small rock. Just a small bit, so you don’t have to worry about nutrients. Mine also love when I clean the glass. That type of algae seems to be a treat or something.

Beautiful fish! I got mine about 5 years ago. Got beat up badly by my Achilles and spend weeks in rehab to grow the fins back. Works great with my Yellow, pyramids and potters but each fish is its own character. Eats spiralina loaded brine shrimps like a pig, and maybe that would be a good thing to try for you, too. Grazes a lot as well.Don’t give up on the nori!

It take a while for them to recognize the clip has holding a source a food. Once it does, it won't stop! I put selcon on my mysis/brine that it ate readily. Then I added selcon to the nori and it started recognizing it as food. No issue now.

This is exactly what mine pigs out on now.

I will give this a try as well.

Thank you!

Cool fish! I prefer the seaweed pellets instead of the sheets. They don't create the mess that sheets create. I also like to put the food in front of a powerhead so it blows everywhere. This gives everyone a chance at food since I have a bunch of greedy tangs. They spend the next 20min or so searching out every pellet and staying very active. I do this a couple times a day mixing mysis and seaweed extreme pellets.

I love mixing all the fish food together and creating a thick slurry paste. Tangs take time to adjust to algae sheets. Some are just ravenous.
A lot of the times you can take the mysis and tear up some nori, small little bites. Thaw the mysis on the nori and drop a few bites in. You may have to teach the guy, nori is safe to eat.
