Anyone have expereince with LEDS?

I am thinking about starting an LED project. I have a couple questions to start.

Are people using the Cree XR-E stars still or is it more common to see the XPG stars used.

Next how large of an array would I need for a 180 gallon mixed reef tank? I was considering 3 pendants styles similar to Santoki's on RC. I currently run 3 250 HWI pendants in lumenarc reflectors.

I also would like to make one for my Deep Sea Aquatics Neo Nano.

Ideally I will hook them up to a Profilux III controller.

I've got a little experience

Making modules similar to how you would use MH pendants can work, and can save on the number of LEDs and drivers required, but PAR distribution isn't as even as it would be if you set up an array that covers the entire tank. Either way, it can be done.

Basic rules to follow when deciding how to set things up are as follows:

-Keep spacing to 2" between LEDs (on center), and 3" between rows. This spacing lets you use pretty much any lens angle option without worrying about spotlighting.

-Alternate your LED colors so you never have the same color next to any LED. This will help blend things very well.

-Cool white and royal blue are all you need for colors. Red is almost nausiating, and doesn't help with anything.

For your setup, if you keep the array 4-6" over the top of the tank, you can use 60 degree optics and still get lots of light at the bottom of the tank. This will be a good setup for a mixed reef. If you want more light, or want to raise the fixture higher than that, then you will need to move to tighter angles. If you stick with the 60s, you will need to use the XR-E LEDs, as XR series LEDs don't have 60 degree lenses available just yet. Only 40 degrees and tighter.

For drivers to work with your Profilux, Meanwell ELN-60-48D's will be your best choice. They will run between 7 and 13 LEDs easily at up to 1000mA (after it's adjusted down from the factory default 1.3A). They use a 0-10v input for dimming, so will be compatible with the appropriate Profilux module.
