im thinking of changing the sump & incorporating a theiling rollermat into it & eliminate the need for socks & that whole process. Has anyone got knowledge/ experience with these? The pros look inviting. Are there any cons/cautions?

I have one running for about 10 months. It is as advertised, does filter solid junk, and is covered so no smell. Running cost is replacing the filter and how often depends on the amount of junk it clears.

I have mine running off a manifold from the return pump with a valve to fine tune the flow. (I previously had it supplied by a dedicated pump again with a valve to adjust flow). My sump is under a table on which the Theiling is placed.

The only con I see will be the price.

The only con I see is the 200-600 gph as a limitation. If that works for you then it seems great. If you need more flow, i believe Coralvue will be bringing in something similar that handles a bit more.

I guess my main concern would be service height it will have to fit under the tank, I have a total height of 29". How much clearance would I need to remove the lid & replace the rollermat? I have a feeling the cost will be offset by the convenience, wear & tear on the washer, Cost of replacing socks ...it's for a 400 g.

Any idea when? What sort of price range?

Would you. Go back to socks?

Seen it in action. does a great job. Major negative is that you really gotta plan your sump layout with the rollermat in mind right from the get go. its very hard to incorporate it into an existing setup like mine. No space :(

It does a good job replacing filter socks. I hate filter socks with a vengeance. They smell, they clog up, hard to clean, expensive, etc.

Another thing i don't like is that these are made with clear plastic. You'd think that for $500 they'd be acrylic or something. Plastic just makes them feel flimsy and cheap.

Have seen folks plumb it straight into the overflow, and also seen some rollers plumed via return pump manifold. Gotta say the one plumbed into the tanks' overflow was catching a lot more crud than the manifold method. Going that route one would have to deal with keeping the overflow's flow low as recommended. I guess one can use a DC return pump to keep return's flow to lower level.

But yes, next tank build will be incorporating a rollermat of some kind. Again, down with filter socks!

then
