I’m not running anything in my system (filter socks, media cups, rollers, etc.). Water looks clear and nutrients are great (consistently at 10 nitrates and 0.08 Phosphates). Seeing if anyone isn’t running any filters as well without any problems. My tank has been running like this for 6 months. Why do you like to run the filters?

I haven’t ran socks filter for just as long it seems like and I also don’t run a skimmer and my water is clear. Just do a regular maintenance sump cleaning and your good to go!!

I dont run any filter socks or filter floss, just skimmer and chaeto. Running this way for the last 9-10 months. Makes for a dirtier sump, but chaeto loves the extra food its getting.

I agree with the maintenance! I’m just running a skimmer on mine.

How regular is your sump cleaning?

The Chaeto somewhat breaks some debris down right? Like what triton is used for I think?

Your chaeto will be used for main nutrient export. So yeah, something similar to the Triton method, just not using the Core 7 products.

Usually about once a month. I do have a decent refugium that collects everything. So I guess my cheato is my filter floss

Do you run your chaeto before the skimmer as well? Or does it not really matter? I Might add some chaeto to help out!

My initial plan was to run a hybrid triton method (chaeto, then skimmer and no core 7) but its setup skimmer, then chaeto.

I run socks to keep the junk out of my sump. It has no fuge and I run an external skimmer. The only thing in the sump is a large basket of rocks with Cryptic and Semi-Cryptic sponges.

I recently saw a local reefers tank, and he had a full fledged cryptic tank for sponges. I was intrigued by it as I had never seen one before, and he explained what its use was for. If I had the space for one, I'd put one online. But for right now my cryptic zone is behind my weir on my 90 :D;)

Nice pic of a great natural filter! As our tanks mature we have cryptic zones anywhere we have rocks or structures that block/shade light.
