idk how it'd go on a reef tank, but i use one on my 40 breeder observation tank. seems to work pretty well, comes with seachem matrix which is nice. it seems to clean the surface pretty well? but can't say for sure since i have a lot of random powerheads hanging around, so i have 2 in there, the surface agitation is quite a bit with them.

i have another HOB filter on another QT tank and that thing is LOUD. the seachem one is really quiet

Terrific filter. I use it in my QT tank with foam and some Marine pure balls as biofilter material.

It's silent, except if you allow the water level to drop. Then you'll hear the splash of the water. I love that it automatically restarts when the power is off. I also like a lot the clip for the heater.

Tidal filter works great. I got the Tidal 55 on a 46 gallon SW tank. The filter it self is silent, but if you let your water level drop, the water sound gets louder same as any other HOB filter. Lots of room for filter media. I have also found that because it skims the surface aswell, my protein skimmer doesn't have to work as hard and pulls less gunk. Great HOB filter!!
If you search on Etsy you can find diy sheet which help quiet them down when the water level drops.
