Not quite black, but deep gray.

I think the colors look good. Actually the color is better for me now then it has been in a long time. My tank has only been set up with the black sand for about 6 months. (I moved.)

So taking that into account, the corals look good. As for "reflected" light from the sandbed being a factor, I think that is over rated. Of course I have T5's, and they are not a point source light like a halide is, so I don't get directional growth anyway.

The other thing to consider is the buffering capacity of the substrate. Gray coast is actually calcite rather then aragonite, which means it dissolves at a lower pH then traditional aragonite sand. (Less buffering)

Nice, but for some reason im in love with the white sand lol maybe ill try that in my 5.5 pico

Hey guys, talk to Gooch (a member here) about the black sand before you buy any. He got a bad batch. Noticed it when he or his wife was running the magnet over the sand and it all stuck to the magnet. I did a search on the thread but all the pics were removed. I would try to stay away from the brand that was used.

yea try the black with a thin layer then u can always cover most of it up... go with lime green gravel for freshwater... that'll POP
