Metal spring. No bueno.

Check valves are notorious for failing, and aren't great candidates for stopping reef back siphoning

These work better, and are a true union so you can clean the flap - which you will have to do often if you want to rely on the check valve to work

Raising your return discharge higher so the siphon breaks, or drilling a siphon break are more reliable ways to prevent back siphon

Siphon breaks are great. You can drill a small hole in the return line in your tank and it will cut the siphon. Just be sure to have it somewhere that it won’t send water out of the tank, as your pump speeds up it may send water out the siphon break until the pressure builds up and the water takes the path of least resistance.

Relying on a check valve can be very risky no matter which brand or style you use (or siphon breaks).
The best way to make sure you don't have a disaster is to plumb your return high enough in the display tank so that your sump will handle the back flow.

Thank you!

I asked IM and they said its not a good idea to drill a hole in the return as water will pump from it...the return is submerged, if I drill a hole, will it make a mess or noise? Whats the best place to drill it? On the side, back or front? I have the NUVO 100 INT
