Anyone using Dr. Sochting's Oxydator

This is my problem when asked about Oxydators I struggle to get all the information required to answer the question in a meaningful way. I need to know a lot about stocking rates gallonage type of animals kept and how heavily people feed as they all play an important part when it comes to getting the best out of your Oxydator.

Fair enough.

As far as feeding, I feed a 1 cm by 1 cm chunk of LRS 2x per day and about a quarter teaspoon TDO chroma-boost 1x per day.
 
There are so many variables between tanks it's not possible to suggest X Y Z for a given size of tank unlike say what manufacturers try to do with say their skimmers, sure they will just quote a ball park figure as in between two stocking levels. With Oxydators we also have to consider the animals we keep as well as stocking levels and just as importantly how much and how often we feed. A lot of information is required to best advise how to run an Oxydator to get the best out of it. Now compare that with an ozoniser with which you are often advised to run it with a redox controller with all tbe extra cost and servicing, calibrating and replacement of the probe. If there is one thing worse than no information it's the wrong information and if a redox controller plays up there csn be not so nice consciences. Once you have an Oxydator worked out to optimise it's potential which in truth isn't so difficult all that is required is to refill it now and again and you can easily work out the timescale for that.

Other than eyeballing it, is there a resource you can point to that has instructions on how to actually determine "optimal" settings?

Maybe a better way to approach using an oxydator is first to determine how detrimental it could be IF used improperly or over-done.

Similar results to overdoing ozone, too sharp a rise in redox, bleach as in peroxide getting into the tank attacking animal's like nems which often are the first to react negatively to overdoing it. However, when I did so many years ago it was by using % strength of peroxide way above I would recommend others use and with multiple catalysts notably 17% and 3 catalysts in a 130 gallon system. I never recommend more than 12% now with 9% more often the norm with no more than 2 catalysts. However, as said there are a lot of variables. I experimented to find the limit for my tank all those years ago and although my magnifica nem reacted negatively it recovered full and quickly after removing the Oxydator and reverted back to 9% with 2 catalysts.

I must consider doing some sort of guide based on my experiences over the years and put it in the files section. However I am away at the moment and have to write this on my phone. Doing a short article for this files section will be done on my laptop when I can get round to it.

Are there any adverse effects on sponges using an Oxydator?
 
I have some sponges in my aquarium - have not seen any negative effects. I run between 6 to 9 % and 2 catalyst to a 90 gallon system.

I run 12% with 2 catalysts in a W and have no issues, lots of sponges, my nem is in good health, my O2 is consistantly 7.5mg/l and redox 400ish, the peroxide generally lasts 8-10 weeks

Do you feel that it has any benefit in coral health / growth?

I’m not sure to be honest, it’s so hard to say what’s cause and effect, I do know it keeps O2 levels higher as I can measure it on my O2 probe, but does that help corals I’m not sure

My W just arrived, have not unboxed it yet. What type of stores can one find 12% hydrogen peroxide? I am in Virginia, USA. I only find 3% online.

I purchase 12% from Amazon. You can get 35% still, but the requirements to sell it will keep it off amazon. 12% is less cost effective, but since that’s what I use in my W, it’s easy....

I just started mine with 1 catalyst and 3%. Gonna get some 12% ordered and just go from there.
