Hi everyone,

I am new to the world of controllers and looking to invest in a classic apex. However, i am a newbie and not sure what to watch out for when buying used.

I have seen some units called out as "orange label" versus some are not. What's the difference?
Also, what's the deal with the probes? Do they need special care when shipped?
Any other things I should watch out for?

What functions would you like to preform and monitor with an Apex controller?

The Classic's do not have built in WIFI and if Apex does not sell that specific controller (anymore) then they might not fix it, if it goes bad.

Mostly into controlling equipment and temperature, ph, salinity monitoring.

Well,
Last year I blew up my old Apex Classic to my own fault

So, At time time I bought the Apex Jr. It comes with a temp probe and can run some things like the DOS pumps.
I run an Cal Reactor so, I had to buy the PM1 module and a new ph probe. It was the right call for what I needed and my budget.

I'm hearing that Apex is getting close to releasing the "new controller" in an base model that may come with ph and salinity too.

For the long haul, the new built in WIFI maybe the right call so you can stay up to date with their add on's.

Either way you go both will run the DOS dosing pumps and they are top notch.

I don't think they service the old Classic "Silver" model, so I would not buy an used one of those.

No special care with the probes and they are easy to keep calibrated.
The temp probe can go bad and I'm on my third one

If others have anymore input, please chime in!!

:)

Didn't they just come out with the new one last year?

I'd say two years ago, but that's just my memory... ;Oldman

I'd stay away from GHL, they have some serious issues that you have to hack around

I've been exploring this as well and have made a decision, so maybe you can benefit from some of my research. In my case, monitoring ph, orp, salinity, and temp are important to me. My initial plan was to buy a used Apex, then add-on whatever modules and probes I needed, plus add a WIFI bridge. The cheapest used setups you'll find are Apex Jr and Apex Lite, but Jr only monitors temp natively, so I'd need to add on 3 separate modules, 3 additional modules, and the WIFI bridge. For the Lite, it does temp and ph natively, so I'm looking at 2 modules, 2 probes, and the WIFI bridge. Assuming I buy all new modules and probes, I'm looking at about $600 and $700, respectively all together. The next option is looking for a used Apex Classic, since it'll do temp, ph, and orp natively. For this, I'd need 1 module, 1 probe, and the WIFI bridge. Prices for these have been all over the place, especially if they're including all probes. For something that has all probes and the add-on salinity module and probe, it seems to run around $600. A bundle without salinity would most likely bring that up even more, since those systems are going for around $500 and I'd either have to buy the module/probe or hunt for a used module and then buy a new probe.

The last option (and the one that I decided was the best fit for me) was to just bite the bullet and buy the new Apex that monitors these 4 parameters natively and includes all probes with WIFI integrated. This runs $800, but I just couldn't find enough cost savings with buying a used unit, since monitoring these 4 parameters are a necessity for me. Most used bundles that have everything I'd need are coming in $600+ and that's not even taking into consideration that you're using an add-on bridge for WIFI and you've have more modules to mount and wires to run.

If you're looking to monitor less, then it probably makes sense to buy preowned, because you definitely can find deals. In my case with the particular setup I'm looking for, it just didn't make sense financially to spend close to what a new unit would cost and have more components to deal with. The last tidbit that was an absolute end-all for me was the upcoming release of the Neptune Trident (automated alk, ca, and mag monitoring). The Trident won't work with any Apex systems other than the new 2016 Apex or an older Apex system that's been upgraded with a new Apex head unit ($400). I definitely want a Trident, so that kinda sealed it for me. Another thing to consider is that Neptune may use the same strategy going forward with releasing new components that only work with the new Apex, so that's something to think about as well. Hope this helps.

Thank you, that's exactly what i was looking for. Parameter monitoring and equipment control is key for me.

@tiggs
Great job and thanks for your input!!

I run this WIFI booster with the Apex classic

And works like an charm.

Deals can be had, I got my classic for $280. But I think you really need to look at what you want to do with it and decide if the cost is worth it to you. As an example, if you want to control your lights and have heater redundancy, you can easily do that with a timer and inkbird controller. If you want to go full integration with pumps, lights, etc. you need to factor those in to your costs, along with the modules that go with them. If you just want to monitor ph than I don't think it is worth it unless you plan on setting up a calcium reactor. It is largely believed the salinity probe is not worth it, so at that point you are left with an expensive temp probe...unless you find value in the orp probe.

That said, I love mine. :D

definitely, No signs of Rust any where and dry PH or Salinity probes likely are probes that will cause headaches.
Be aware also of scratched/cracked displays.

I'll be honest with you on this. Your best bet is to just purchase the 2016 Apex package. With it you will get everything you need for your setup (all new probes and an EB832). You won't have to deal with neglect from a previous owner on the probes.

If a new unit is out of the question, I'd say be careful when buying a used one (like anything else honestly). I upgraded my classics to the new unit and love the ability to keep everything updated without having to connect to a computer, that is the biggest benefit for me. I still have my classic head unit and PM2 module as a backup just in case one of the 2016 units decides not to work and need to be replaced.

If you buy a Classic Apex, then a new pH/ORP probe (if needed), and add a PM2 and a salinity probe (not included with a Classic) you are easily 1/2 to 3/4 the price of a 2016, and you have a used unit without any of the new features.

The 2016 has WiFi, is also required to run the EB832 or the new Trident, and will carry a warranty.

The EB832 current monitoring works on a per-outlet basis, meaning you can do things like be alerted to a snail stuck in your skimmer, or a return pump failure.

Yeah that is why I was saying just get a new unit and call it a day. If he can find a deal from someone he feels he can trust, then by all means do the deal.

Yeah, I get trying to save up front, but I also think a lot of people who try to save up front don’t know yet how much they’ll end up loving the apex and wanting more out of it anyway.

I’m in a similar boat now. I wanted to control and monitor my girlfriends 5g tank with my Apex. So I’m looking at a PM2, a salinity probe, another temp probe. And might as well get a an EB4 or EB832 right? And now I’m starting to think I need to just get another Apex....

For a 5g tank, I'd say that if they are close to one another, just go the route that you are taking with extending your existing Apex (will save you some $$ that way). You don't need an EB832 unless that is what you want. Another EB8 would work in that situation. But at the end of the day, what is your likelihood of upgrading to a larger tank? You have to plan for something like that so you do not end up with a lot of equipment that you won't be able to use in the future.

Well, a PM1, PM2, temp, ORP, and salinity probe retails for $415 alone.

If I wanted to add pH that’s another $160 (for comparisons sake) so $575 for all 4 probes, add a EB8 for $160, and I’m only $65 under the cost of a 2016 bundle. At that point I’m a fool for not spending $65 for a EB832 and the luxury of not having her stuff clutter up my already dense dashboard lol.

I wish I could get her to upgrade. She’ll never be happy. I have a Reefer 750 right next to it. But no, she’s gotta have another tank. It was a Lagoon 25, convinced her to sell it and put her coral in my big tank, she did, then she built the 5, and then brought home a 10g, and hasn’t even set that up before bringing home a Fluval 13....

Reefers. What can I say. You people can’t be happy unless you tinker lol

Lol. Get a big 300+ gallon! That'll keep her occupied for about a week :). Then you'll have to upgrade the following week to a 500 :D
