I started by identifying my needs and then got equipment to match. Thus for the first 3 years I had added a basic hydor nano waver maker (and 2 hydor nano pumps) a willfi (alternate to inkbird) temperature controller and a BRS DIY ATO. My RadidLED Coronas. like most lights these days are controlled by their own app.
When I decided I wanted to clean up all that hardware at the plugs, desired some alerts and wanted the feed program (unplugging all those pumps to spot feed was a PITA), I looked at controllers.
The new apex was a dream, but at $1k it had a lot of muscle that I did not need. I was ready to start a DIY ReefPi project (see the tread that
@Ranjib has put together with fellow hobbyist), but came across a used complete Apex Classic for $200 in the buy/sell. The classic meets my needs.
The classic can be tricky to set up on a home wifi (it's was designed to ethernet right into your router) , but once you get it set up it's good. It does need to be reset after power outages to connect back to Fusion, but the unit will still run your tank when it powers back up as it saves the settings .
Apex has an entry ApexEL under $500.
