Just ordered a Apex DŌS this morning for water changes on my 270g display tank. I love the idea of auto water changes and a few days a week rather than a 50 gallon change every two weeks.

Thinking early in the morning or very late at night a Mon, Wed, and Fri around 8 gallons for 24 gallons per week. I have a 60 gallon sump and will of coarse have to turn off the ATO and main pump. This is the point I get a little worried. Can I just leave the main pump on? Guess maybe star filling a few min after getting rid of the old water.

The DOS says it can handle 250 ml per min which means it will be about 2.5 hours

Any thoughts from you all? Thanks is advance.

If its anything like my automatic water change system (Stenner pump with dual heads) then you should be fine. I didn't realize the DOS could do water changes, thought it was more for dosing chemicals.

In any case, you can set one pump head to pull water out while the other one puts water back into the system. Yes, the possibility of new water being taken out is there but according to Randy in the chemical section on R2R, it's so mininal that it wouldn't matter. This way you won't have to shut down anything.

On my system, I have my mixing tank pump (100g silo) kick on to make sure everything is mixed well. Then it shuts down and the Stenner pump is turned on via Apex to run for 30 mins (1g daily). It simultaneously exchanges water at the same time. I do however shut a few things like the skimmer (when I had one), ATO, etc off via programming.

I'm in Miramar, FL if you want to drop by and check out my system. Alternatively, my system build is in my signature as well.

Had a friend buy one to do the same thing. He found out though after he purchased it that it wasnt good for the pump to run for an extended period of time. It was likely to over heat. I'm sure you could do small water changes spread out over the day.
