I have a 200w Finnex heater with control on it. It is plugged into my Apex. What is the best way to keep the aquarium a steady temperature? Should I have my controller set to auto or just on position. Thanks!

I don't have an Apex, but I wouldn't think you'd want your heater always on. I'd set it for a temp that it would be able to sustain your tank at.

This is what I do: Use the Apex to set an ON (low) and an OFF (high) temp, then set it to AUTO. Set the temp on the heater slightly above where you would like it. I dial it while it's in the tank and watch the light kick on.

This uses the more sensitive and accurate temp probe on the Apex very well.

The temp controller on the heater is more likely to break and cook your tank, which is prevented with using the Apex.

But the Apex temp probe is not fail proof either. But I'm not too familiar with all of the steps to avoid problems with that. It's unlikely tho. You can use email alarms for one thing.

The finnex with the analog dial control I had went out after a year. It was he controller on the heater that went out. Would not kick on. Cut it off and sized the plug back on. Works perfectly with my rke now.

Thanks for the input. I set the apex 74-77 range. My heater is in the sump with both probes. Should I set the temp higher so the tank gets warmer?

You can put the heater down stream from the probes so that the probes are showing the temp of the tank as best as possible, then controlling the heater from that. If the probe is too close to the heater, it will turn off and on too much.
