Personally I would either get the 2016 apex el or full.

It might be a good intro into a controller. The latest and greatest is tempting, but you might not need all those bells and whistles.
$200 might not be the firm price

Depends on what your trying to accomplish. For instance, my 11 year old son just setup an 8 gallon BioCube. An Apex Jr with a 4 outlet Energy Bar is perfect. If you have to control more than 4 outlets, move up to a used classic or 2016 models.

Pass. People are selling the gold or classic for 2-300. The prices are dropping due to the fact that you can not use the trident on the gold / classic.

I got a Jr. local to me for like $50. Granted its the older black label and used but man the thing has been rock solid for 6 months. I love it. I keep buy more neptune gear to add to it. So far i added VDM for my return pump, WXM for my radion and mp10, a DOS and recently picked up the AFS. I even added optical sensors off ebay to my DOS that i monitor my ATO container and sump level. Apex is great! I will upgrade when it breaks or i get a bigger tank. Right now i use the 4 outlets for a heater, a fan, my skimmer/sump powerhead, and my ATO...

Rocking an Apex Classic here. Works great. Only real pains are that it wont work with DOS and it doesn't have on board wifi.

If you got the itch, go for it. That way if you find out a controller isn't for you, you could probably sell it for close to what you paid. I get that it may not connect to the latest and greatest features, but that doesn't necessarily have to be where the value lies.

Like many I debated the Apex for years. I don't use one anymore FWIW, it's not that I dislike them, just aside from maybe a heater fail safe it really didn't do anything for me as a reefer. I was just a terrible reefer who now had networking problem lol.
