Finally pulling the trigger after 2 years and planning to purchase the ApexEl

Problem is I don't have a sump so where would the best place to place your probes in tank?

I'm running the HOB Octopus 100 protein skimmer and I was just planning to put it in the return chamber?

Do you think there would be any problems with that and any suggestions on what I could use to hold the probe in place?

Depends on the probe. In the end you want to measure what's going on in the display as much as possible.. IE don't put temp probe next to a heater etc.

In my AIO I have:
  • temp prob in the chamber before the heaters
  • ph probe as far from my alk dosing line as reasonably possible (at least upstream)
  • the Trident's input is actually in the display & not in the back chambers

What did you use to mount the probes? Or did you just submerge it in the back

You would need a holder of some kind. The instructions for the apex tell you the rubber boot has to be above water. Several companies make probe holders though.

from everything I've read the only one you can fully submerge is the temp probe (I still don't though).

The Apex EL comes w/ 2 probes - temp and ph. I recently tried a couple probe holders and ended up liking the Zoo Med MagClip Magnetic Suction Cups the most. You'll need one per probe... but its one of the cheapest solutions, has a small footprint, allows you to separate your probes and get them into tighter spots or vary the heights (temp probe is way shorter than ph probe).

The AquaGadget Custom Cradle was another one I tried and it was "meh"; the dosing lines kept slipping out & the magnet isn't very strong... so it had to go.

The magclips are a good idea as its such a small footprint that it'll fit my return chamber of skimmer

Problem putting it in the tank is that coralline and algae quickly covers it like my ato sensor. Have to clean that out monthly.
