So I am considering getting an Apex. My tank is in my den on the first floor and the sump is in the basement. How does one control the lights and wave makers if I put the Apex in the basement with the sump.

You can have up to 200ft of aquabus cables combined, and the max length of a single cable is at least 100ft (I know they make 100ft ones, not sure about any individual cables longer than that). So you can run a cable from the Apex in the basement up to your tank, as long as you don't go over the cable length restrictions.

Apex offers the ability to add multiple energy bars (eb832) so that you can have electrical control anywhere you put an eb832. It's not uncommon for users to have the main apex brain in either the basement or 1st floor and control devices spread across the house.

would i need a second power strip for the tank upstairs to power the lights and mp40's ???
Gen4 and below can be controlled via a WXM module and doesn't require you to plug them into an eb832. Same goes for all wireless vortechs. Just have the wxm close enough to the ecotech devices so that they can communicate wirelessly.
