Hi all,

Can I use a Hanna 35.0 calibration fluid on an apex salinity prob to calibrate it?

Thanks,
James

Neptune use 53,000 uS conductivity standard for their probes.
I actually have the hanna conductivity calibration fluid on hand. Its 12,880 uS

i would used the neptune conductivity packets. Also I believe temperature is very important of the calibration fluid.

Ok, i kinda figured that, but thought I’d ask the experts! I’ll order some packets today.
Thank you for your response!!

Just an FYI, don't get too frustrated trying to get the conductivity probe calibrated. It can be a process, and the probe will drift after a few days, and is good for more of an estimated salinity level, than an accurate one.

Yes! I just experienced that!.. not a good experience though... I’m new to reefing, had a freshwater tank for 14 years, stopped for about 5 years due to a big move from Portland, OR to Georgia! Now trying out Reefing :) there is a LOT to learn!

I was trusting the Apex to give me accurate readings and found out my salinity was almost 40 when it was reporting 33.6! I just about had a heat attack! I did a water change and replaced with RO water and now its 36, trying to bring it down slowly... I’ll take your advice and just use it as a reference every now and then..

Thanks for the reply!

Yeah, I ended up just calibrating it to my tank water in the end. I have a swing arm and two VeeGee refractometers that I trust.

The APEX conductivity reading I just use as an alarm in case the ATO sticks on/off.

Yes, please don't use the Apex probe to base your salinity level off of! Always use a refractometer. :)

Thanks Gareth! I was asking myself the same question since I have the Hanna calibration fluid at home and no Neptune calibration fluid. Can you please tell me where it's written that the Hanna conductivity is 12,880 uS ? I can't seem to find this information anywhere.
Cheers

The Hanna marine salinity tester:

is designed to be calibrated with a 35 ppt standard shown on their web page, which matches the Neptune standard and they should be interchangeable.

Assuming both companies know what they are doing, 35 ppt and 53 mS/cm (53,000 uS/cm) are the same.
