Have a buddy offering me his apex unit.

Included is:
the Apex unit itself
2 8 outlet strips
2 temp probes
2 ph probes
for$500

im not sure if this is the gold unit? he was unsure when i asked.
I'm wondering if this is a good deal? looking to monitor 2 separate tanks.

The Gold would of had the PM2 module, salinity probe and ORP probe... along with one EB8, main module, pH probe and temp probe.

You can buy the apex classic (formerly the gold) for $549 at BRS. The extra EB8 would be great to have, but do you have more than 8 pieces of equipment that absolutely have to be plugged into the controller?

I just have 2 separate tanks on opposite sides of the room. So he was gunna give
Me the 2 eb8s. Idt I could plug them all into one. Also that was my concern, why wouldn't I just get a brand new one unless I'm saving some money..

So guessing this isn't the gold. I hadn't done much apex research. Am I gunna regret not getting the better one down the road? Or I can just add it when I'm ready?

If it were me, I'd go new for the extra $50. You also should keep in mind that the probes need to be replaced periodically, so if they've been in use for years, you may need new ones. If the ph probe was allowed to dry out, then you definitely need a new one of those.

Go with the new one at BRS, definitely is not a gold version because you want to come with the PM2, and totally agree with Bradley if you don't know the condition of the pH probes then you end up buying a new one that is basically same money that you have to add to buy a bran new unit!!!!!
Offer him $400, remember the new version just came out

I've talked him down to $300 for this.

The energy bar 8, pm1, one breakout box, 1 float valve with power line control, 2 float valves for breakout box and plenty of short and long Usb cables . The pm1 comes with a temp probe

How does that look? Should I still go with a new one?

remember that a second EB8 cost $159.00 new and used about $125.00 and if you have 2 tanks its eiser to run a Aquabus cable to the second EB8 at the tank then to run powercables unless the tanks are right next to each other.

at $300.00 thats a good price see if you can get the second EB8 also

I've read the temp probes never require calibration, but you should check it against a good thermometer. There's a huge swing in tolerance with thermometers, so use a few and take the average (the probe can be calibrated if it's off).
The ph probe can be recalibrated, but I think a year or two is about average life for one. Pick up a couple packs of ph 7.01 and 10.01 (like $1-$2 each) to check/calibrate it.
