I'm going to be starting a large build in a year or so..

Jeff's dream custom aquariums in wall tank build.

And I'm concerned for the apex system because I frequently see people providing issues they had. I've never considered or looked into profilux, but does anyone have personal experiences between the two?

Are there different controllers out there that are better?

I was on the fence about apex also. I got it anyways, been a solid unit, no issues except for the one you create. I can honestly say its been 100% since I got it. Computer app works great, iPad app and iPhone great also.

I do not have any experience with the profilux.

Good to know and thank you for the feedback. This is going to be a hard decision for sure. Wish I could have a trial run of the two. Do you know why some people's crash?

I can't answer that in 100% confidence. They will tend to disconnect from the network if apex loses power, just need to hit the reset button to get it to connect again. It still does what its suppose to do even if it disconnects. I had that happen once in 7 months. This may have been fixed in the new firmware update. I turned my power off the other day and apex came right back up no issues.

No crashing on my end, and I'm apex equipment heavy, got about everything except flow sensors and wave makers.

I don't use either, so no fanboy reaction here... people will usually write a review based on what they are using.

Apex is hobby-grade controller with lots of connections to a lot of different products. This is not production-class or high end.

GHL is higher quality and more down the road of production-class reliability. You cannot usually connect as much stuff to these.

Both are still better used as a monitor than a "controller," IMO. Neither of them are reliable enough to trust them with anything important. Some people do, but this is where the horror stories come from.

Good point, I think regardless of which I choose, I will manually test from time to time to prevent any catastrophes

GHL actually has as much or more connections to 3rd party devices than the Apex does.

@Murica The first thread by @Ditto posted earlier is a VERY good thread on pretty much every comparable aspect of each controller. It's a long read but it will tell you everything you need to know about both controllers.:)

Yes very informative! I skimmed through it but plan on giving it a better read later.

Good to know about third party devices, but did you know of any equivalents to the Neptune trident? Would the trident be compatible with the ghl?

Trident, like many other Neptune products, is only compatible with the Apex 2016 Version. The GHL comparable is the KH Director. It does not however test for Mag or Cal. GHLs Ion Director will test those parameters and more but it has yet to be released so the details on what else it tests or will test aren't fully released yet.

It is also worth noting that most of the other Alk Monitoring devices available (KHG and Alktronic) are compatible with either system.

Before you go through the switching controllers thread, write down and prioritize what you want the controller to do/monitor. You'll probably come up with more after one is in your hands, but knowing what your priorities are will help you make a decision as you see the different ways things are implemented in the comparison thread.

I use a Profilux 3, I had been leaning Profilux when a guy on my local forum posted an unused setup for cheap and I grabbed it. I have been very happy with it.

Great idea, I'll write down my priorities. I'm mainly looking for automation and ease of use.

Thanks for the info! Hopefully it's out by the time I buy so I can compare that one as well
