My API amonia kit keeps turning into cloudy syrup on my saltwater testing. Is this normal? I couldn't find anything on it.

Works fine on fresh water

What is expiration date on the bottle?
Not looking good in consistency, I would suggest taking a water sample to a trusted LFS and see what readings they come up with.

Its exp is 2027

I have another one in box, i will try it and compare. I have higher end tests for everything except for amonia and nitrite.

Is there a recommended salt water amonia test?

Salifert or Hanna

A little better on the new kit, it still looks sludgy, but isn't more viscus than water like a syrup. The cloudiness is more homgenous and the result is the same.

I went ahead and added 3ppm worth of ammonia by vollume and my result changed by exactly that, so i guess while the tests might have a wide margin of error, at least they are consistent.

I wonder what on earth is causing one test to make a syrup out of my 1.025 saltwater.

Oh well! Thank you all very much for the help

Are you using your finger to cover the tube, when mixing, or the plastic cap?

I never have trusted these kits once I saw the false and fail rate with them
While some are successful with them, much outweighed by far too many who lost their systems due to false readings

Yes, this normal.

Evan, your tank is five weeks old and cycled, no need to use this test on it ever again. The only time your ammonia won’t be safe is if your fish die from non cycling issues and you leave them in to rot.

only rotting fish can raise your ammonia, you have no rotting fish, don’t bother testing anymore. Be studying the disease forum, none of your posts address disease preps and that’s more important than verifying a completed cycle by adding yet more ammonia.

cycle done, cease testing for it, add no more ammonia, read disease forum before adding fish.

The reason you don’t need a double check from a pet store is because you’re cycled, nobody has an incomplete cycle at five weeks. it’s never been documented in a thread we can read, so you don’t need to think your reef is the first one.

old cycling science habits per rules from prior years: no mention of disease preps ever, focuses on panic of incompletion and reverification over and over, requires alternate kits and tests for proofing. Has no alternate marker of being cycled other than what api says.

new cycling science habits based on the sum total of internet posts on the matter: there are no five week cycling charts, you’re cycled even if you never tested one time in five week’s wait, must read disease forum since 0% have problems controlling ammonia in today’s cycle and nearly everyone will encounter disease in dry start reefs stocked with pet store fish.

You have a passing score on test #2 but we didn’t need to see that to know you’re ready, even if it showed light green you’d be ready. When api varies it’s reading for all non chemist posters, that doesn’t mean it’s true. There is an alternate way to discern cycle readiness- # of days underwater compared to the ammonia control line on a cycling chart, ten days.

if this is a quarantine tank, I recommend not cycling it using the 2 ppm ammonia method + API, I recommend cycling it in a way that works correctly all the time, not using 2 ppm + api but using another way. if this isn't a quarantine tank you're talking about/high surface area display/then no further verification needed, ready to go for fish disease protection mode.
