API Freshwater Kit?

It could give false results. It would work though. The only api I have trouble with is the ammonia kit. I have both freshwater and marine. Sometimes I mix up the dropper bottles. That one always messed up when I do that. If it is easy enough to exchange might as well do that.

Reagents are 100% the same so use it without worry. Only difference between kits is that you get both standard and high range ph in fw vs only high range in sw

this is a neat way to view it:

of all the included measures, nitrate is the only one you need from start to finish

specifically, we dont need api ammonia and nitrite to cycle. we have endless rolls of cycles fixed in spite of the readings, that doesnt make the readings required at all. so if you want to measure nitrate, then buy the saltwater version but if you want to save just buy the nitrate test kit.

to cycle without testing

add bottle bac, you're cycled. I've never seen an example of a failed bottle bac cycle and when we see one in a reef tank post, advice w be adapted
