Hello...I'm a new member and I have a question regarding choice of medication to use in my tank. I have a 32 Biocube that has been running close to 7 weeks. Occupants include a banggai cardinal, 2 hermits, 2 peppermint shrimp, 2 ocellaris clownfish, live sand and approximately 35 pounds of live rock. The clownfish were just added last Saturday. The cardinal has been in the tank for 2 weeks. As of yesterday, I noticed one of the clown fish doesn't seem to be eating as well as the other and his color seems lighter in comparison. I also noticed white, stringy poop 1x last night and 1x again today. I don't have meds on hand for treatment but I can purchase API General Cure today. I would have to order Metroplex and Focus, neither of which will be here until Wednesday at the earliest. Should I go ahead and buy the API today and treat the whole tank ASAP or wait until the other products would come later this week? Another option would be to treat with API and maybe order the other products to have on hand for treatment later in the week? The fish in question will take some food into his mouth but I notice that he spits it back out. Any suggestions for treatment methods would be much appreciated!!

Sounds like a good course would be to use focus and general cure (has the anti-parasitic prazi in it) to bind it to the food for internal treatment of parasites. Putting it just in the water may not get the relief you are after. But if this is all you can do for today you may choose to try something.

I was able to get the API General Cure today but have not yet put it in the tank. I will go ahead and order the focus and the metroplex to have on hand. I'm probably going to go ahead and put the API in tonight. I just tried to feed frozen mysis and the little guy once again goes after the food but then spits it out, not to mention more white poop :(

If the fish is not eating or able to eat, placing General Cure in the tank can take care of many internal parasites. Often, when they stop eating, GC is the one of the paths to take to attempt to rid the fish of internal parasites (worms).

I went ahead and dosed the tank and will place an order for the other items tonight. I've tried to read as much as possible on here and it sounds as if I should apply the API again in 5-7 days, not following the 48 hours directions supplied on the instructions. Should I go ahead and start the focus/metro once I get it in addition to the API that I'm using?

Dose, wait 5-7 days. Do a 25% water change to remove as much of the debris and worm remains as possible. Re dose. Wait 5-7 days and repeat the water change and then observe for a few days. Too many meds can be harsh on the fish's immune system. The GC has Metro and praziquantel already. So adding more Metro is unnecessary. Best of luck with your fish.

Could you also do an additional water change after the 48 hour efficacy period but before the second dose? Just thinking through the potential buildup of uneaten food, etc.

Tomorrow will be the 6th day since I dosed the tank with API GC and I plan on doing a water change and doing the 2nd round of GC. So far, so good! Other than having an increase in nitrate readings, all occupants survived the treatment and my clown in question now appears to have gained some weight and no more white poop!

Do you need to turn off skimmer or remove the cup when dosing into dt?

You dosed the tank with the hermits and the shrimp still in there, and they are still alive?

That's awesome. I was under the impression that GC was bad for inverts.

What about snails? Are there any of those in the tank? Asking because I'm currently treating a clownfish in a quarentein tank for the same reasons you mentioned. It seems to have helped. He pushed out a lot of white stringy nastiness, and now after 3 days he seems to have found his appetite. A hermit to clean up after him would be useful.

I dosed according to the instructions, and found your thread when researching how long to wait for the second round of treatment. 7 days it is.
