Api master test kit nitrate reading?

I have the Api nitrate test kit and don't know if i;m getting the right reading. When I hold it up close to a light the color is lighter when I move away from the light the color is darker. So which reading would you go with?

You should hold it in front of the white plastic back ground.

And it is hard to read.

Fortunately once it drops down to unmeasureable, it won't make much difference.

Hold it right against the paper. I did a test on my tap water, and when held the tube nex to the paper it still was the pure yellow (0 ppm). So when I tested my tank at that time, it looke yellow away from the paper, but more orange next to it. So, the colors are calibated to have the test ube next to the color coded paper.

I have been holding it front of the white plastic. What i;am asking is should I hold it up to a light? Because when hold the test tube and white plastic up to a light the color is lighter but away from the light the color is darker. so should I hold it up to a light when reading the color card?

Put it up against the card or look directly into the tube for coloration. Not up against the light.
