Hey,

Apogee just came out with the MQ 500.
From what I've gathered the 200 doesn't read well for the blue end of the spectrum. The new 500s main feature is the new photodiode and it's supposed to be more accurate across the board.

It's not useless, although the new MQ-500 is more accurate in the violet range. If you can find a good deal with the MQ-200 I'm not sure whether the extra accuracy of the MQ-500 is worth of the extra money.

I have the MQ 500 and what I do is I take it with me when I go to vivid because that's the best store in my neck of the woods by far and I stick it in the tank to see where they've got a growing and then I just write that on the bag with a sharpie and when I get home I put it in the same spot same spot my tank. That way I don't have to guess about numbers or anything it just works. I'll also add that I have the exact same lights set to the exact same program as vivid as well so I think that helps.

Does anyone know if the biotek marine sensor is from the 200 or 500? I I believe biotek is a collaboration with apogee to offer sensor without handheld unit so you just plug into computer.

Apogee is no longer upgrading the mq-200.

I'll have a used one up for sale as soon as it comes back from a calibration.

So Is the general consensus is that the MQ200 Apogee's are not worth 350$ shipped? Reason I ask, My local club is closing it's doors and that was the meter we had. I really don't want to spend 400 on a meter. Thanks

I believe they are $375 still and yes, they ARE worth it. there's no consensus that says otherwise.

The sensor is identical. The difference is the reader. Apogee is not getting rid of the 500.

They will either phase out the 500 and 200 or drop the prices. right now they are the same price as the 510 and 200.

You might want to check out the biotek marine par meter. It is the sensor part of the apogee, only you plug into your computer instead of paying for a handheld. At $195 it was affordable for me and gives me what I need at a reasonable price. Considering it sits on the shelf 90% of the time. I've actually only pulled it out 3 times. Just my .02.
