Does anyone use this?

I am wanting to set up a Biocube (29G) and was thinking about using this just to make my top-off water. No waste and a lot cheaper than a RO/DI device. Since I will have a nano tank I won't need to make a lot of water.

Aquarium Water Quality: Tap Water Filter

Thanks!

No waste because no reverse osmosis. I would not use this. For a small amount of water you could just buy pre-made water from your LFS.

Buying RO water from my LFS was my initial plan but then I keep reading on here about LFS not keeping their equipment up and not getting quality water. I think I read a lot on the mistakes page.

The tap water filter is often exhausted in as little as 15 to 30 gallons of water. It only holds so much resin and carbon so have a very limited capacity. Remember the RO membrane is what does 90-98+% of the treatment, the sediment and carbon filters are only there to protect the RO membrane, and the DI is merely a final polishing filter to finish off that last 2% os so.

Don't waste your money, they get extremely expenisve in a hurry. 99% of those who report good results don't have a TDS meter so really have no idea if it is working or not, usually not.

Portable RO/DI systems are not the answer either. They use non standard replacement filters that do not come in the preferred micron ranges, cost more, do not filter as well. do not last as long and are harder to find. It will end up costing much more than a real reef quality $140 RO/DI system that uses standard 10" replacement filters that can be found in 1 micron or smaller sizes most anywhere and for much less money and full size refillable 20 oz DI filters with good fresh resin and contact times.

The portables really aren't much smaller either since many use the same top bracket to hold the membrane housing, the portables clip everything loosely on top while the normal systems screw them on the bttom vertically. Same footprint but the portable is prone to leaks since nothing is solidly fastened.

I used one some years back for a nano tank. didn't have any problems, but If you think It's cheaper long term your wrong. the filters are expensive and don't last long. also depends on your tap water. mine has a TDS of 40 which isn't bad. some tap water have TDS in the hundreds. over all not nearly as good as RO/DI unit.
