Aptaisia in the overflow[emoji35]

I so mad.
I have rearranged my tank and bleached a lot of rock. I have Kalk slurryed a bunch and thought I was a head of it.
So randomly I took a pic down the overflow and I have a whole bunch of aps down there. So, how do I deal with this? My OCD is taking over my mind. I'm thinking of capping off the bulkheads and pouring bleach in the overflow. I would have to capture the bleach and then do a rinse or 3.
Thoughts? Has anyone been successful dealing with aps in the overflow?

Once there in the tank thats pretty much it. All it takes is one spore in one drop of water. the problem is the reproduce even at a young age and even with nudis they will grow back

Not so sure that is completely true. In my last tank I saw Aptaisia in my overflow (one side only) and in my sump.....NEVER ever saw one in my display! I shut down my pump, blocked the drain line and Majano Wand killed the ones in my overflow and then drained it empty. The ones on my sump rocks I removed the rock and used fire!!!

Maybe try putting a peppermint shrimp in your overflow. I put one in my tank after I noticed about 6-8 aiptasia in my display. But it kept going into my external overflow box. After fishing it out every day or two for a couple weeks, I got a second peppermint hoping they would hang out together in the display. Now I fish both of them out of the overflow box every day or two. One of them seems to stay in the display a little longer than the other, but never more than 3-4 days.

It’s an external overflow with a straight weir with no teeth, so I can’t keep them from going in at their will. They seem to go into the overflow by choice though. But on a positive note, the 6-8 aiptasia have slowly disappeared, so they seem to be eating them on the nights they actually stay in the display. They also eat any food scraps that make it into the overflow. My two peppermints would probably love it in your overflow.

That's a good idea. I'm wary about peppermints cuz I hear they go after acans and blasto type corals. Do they get along with coral banded shrimp?

I have two type of acans and have not had a problem, but have read about others that did have problems, usually with larger peppermints. Also read of some people accidentally getting camel shrimp instead of peppermint shrimp. From what I’ve read, camel shrimp are definitely a problem with corals.

Do you have aiptasia in your display? Or only in the overflow? If the peppermint is in your overflow, it won’t be able to get to your acans.

BTW, I just fished both of my peppermints out of the overflow again tonight. I don’t see anymore aiptasia though, so if they go in the overflow again I’ll probably just leave them in there until I see another aiptasia in the display.

No personal experience with coral banded shrimp, so I can’t comment on compatibility with peppermints.

I had this monster in my old tank's overflow. Didn't have any in the display and I didn't even know it was in there for a while.

I don’t think they are the end of the world in a reef tank. I just keep them in check once a month with aiptasia x. The ones in the overflow don’t harm a thing, and I have purposely let some grow and touch various types of corals and haven’t seen them cause any damage. I actually don’t mind there appearance. Unless you tear down the tank and bleach everything they will probably reappear at some point.

I have two type of acans and have not had a problem, but have read about others that did have problems, usually with larger peppermints. Also read of some people accidentally getting camel shrimp instead of peppermint shrimp. From what I’ve read, camel shrimp are definitely a problem with corals.

I see them in the sand bed, on the base of coral, rock and tube worms. I will kalk paste them and a couple days later see a bunch I missed. I really thought I was getting ahead of it. Yesterday I saw 2 on my gargonian. [emoji35]

Right there with you, my daughter has a keen eye for them so as I squirt aiptasia x in them she finds the ones I missed. She’s home from UCSB this week and started commenting on the aiptasia, I asked her if she wanted to kill some so we nuked around 20 through out the tank and today they are gone we are pretty good at it now. There’s some big suckers back where they can’t be reached and in my overflow but they don’t bug me. I figure the ones in the overflow are probably catching food particles from fish and coral feedings so that probably helps things out.

I did it, I think I've gone crazy. I keep pulling out apts, Kalk pasteing, cutting them off rocks, sucking them out of the sand bed. So I think I'm ahead of it. But today I had to put the perverbial nail in the coffin. Cut the snake off at the head.
I did the unthinkable. I poured bleach in the overflow. [emoji33] I drained the overflow, closed the valves, and poured it in. Rinsed twice with hot tap water, twice with di water and once with tank water. Didn't smell bleach any more, so started the system back up. Everything is doing fine 4 hours later. In fact, my rock nem is opened more than I have ever seen him. [emoji41]
