So Im setting up a tank, and I found a good deal on a local forum, 150 pounds of live rock for 100 dollars. I am wondering if I should pass on the deal. The rock is full of live has lots of coraline algae, but has some aptasia. Is it worth it to try and fight these off, or should I just go with dry rock?

if possible scrape/chip off as much coraline as possible, keep it in a cup in another tank(DT, FRAG) . Boil, (cook etc..etc.. whatever) the live rock to kill all aptasia then dry the rock. after putting in the dry rock sprinkle sprinkle the crushed up coraline on it in the tank. should seed it pretty quick. 150lbs for 100$ sounds like a awesome deal. BUT i would destroy the aptasia.

Just buy some Peppermint shrimp if they are small Aptasia and if they are larger disc's around 1 inch then buy a CBBF or inject with straight lemon juice... this should take care of all your aptasia problems

whoops, my advice was if the rock was infested. lol if there's not too much put the rock in a spare tank with a good airstone and drop in 5-7 pep shrimps to destroy them. or make a thick kalk paste and cover em up. then when you don't see any for a week it should be good.

"raises hand" that works too. small propane tank with torch attachment works awesome. plus it's fun watching those buggers burn while saying "BURN BABY BURN - DIEEEEEE" lol

I'd up the ante and get one of those ones that can cut through a car door and really let em have it. Lol

Snatch that deal up! Peppermint shrimp for sure will tear them up. Easiest way in my opinion. Just make sure they are the caribbean variety.

+1 on dealing with the aiptasia without killing the rock. Most likely aiptasia will be introduced in the future by accident so you may as well learn how to deal with it now without losing all the good things that come with the live rock. I kept it out of my tank for the first two years after I set up by being lucky enough to never put anything in there that was hiding the pest. My first piece made it's way in hidden in some macroalgae I bought from a reputable dealer on line (not a sponsor here).
