Hey guys,

New to the forum, but have been using it as a guide for several months. I have a 5 month old tank these brown looking anemone are springing up.

Does anyone know what they are? should I start covering them in Aptasia X?

Welcome to R2R! Can you provide us with a picture of the item in question? :)

Sure! I tried to upload a photo with the post
They are very tiny but in this photo you can see several.

I dont believe they're aptasia, they appear to look more like colonial hydroids.

Are Hydroids pest? If it help, the things in the picture retract when agitated.
Yes, pest. Not sure on how to rid of them. How much do you feed the tank? Overfeeding will cause their numbers to increase. Manual removal is probably the best. Otherwise kalk paste over them.

1-10 how worried should I be about these colonial hydroids. Thanks for the help everyone.

If they are only on the one rock, remove it and throw it away!
I have a tank that has been completely taken over by colonial hydroids and aiptasia and the hydroids are by far worse! From what I have found the only way to rid the tank of them is to remove all inverts and treat the tank with a specific chemical (I have forgotten the name but you can do a search and find it). The inverts need to stay out of the tank for 3 months after the tank is treated. I am getting ready to do this now. Once it is done I will be getting berghia nudibrach to get rid of the aiptasia infestation.
For the hydroids I have tried everything and they come back within 24-48 hours regardless of what I try to smother them with.

Rock has been removed! that should take care of the colonial hydriods for now, but now I have to worry about branching hydriods. and these snowflake hydriods. They spread much faster and made it to a large center piece rock that I can not remove. Should I just try to live with these or start a war with them?
