Ok so I have the 125 reef ready tank and just had a quick question about the overflows. Currently I have my overflow standpipes too high so I’m not getting much surface skimming, so I will be redoing them.
For my question, would it be okay to just use one of the overflow boxes (left side) as drains - would be two 1” drains - and have the other side (right side) as the return and 3rd emergency drain if the water level would get too high? Would I be experiencing any sort of issues doing so - without taking water noise into consideration, I’m not worried about that.

What's the question ?

I assume you could do that but honestly I wouldn't worry about an emergency drain. Just make sure to install a check vaule in the return from sump to tank run. My tank it set up with far right and far left as returns from the sump to tank. Then inner left and right return from the tank to the sump. For the noise simply make ur return from the tank to sump like seen in mine . The hole on top of the 90 allows for return to be silent .

And that's a t fitting 1 " with a slip 90 ( must use a slip 90 in my opinion, and it still lowes has a better selection then home depot) 3/4" coming off the t fitting . And caped at the top where u drill a 1/4 hole .

I have the same tank. The holes in my overflow don't support 2 1" bulkheads. One is 3/4 and the other is 1". I converted both my 3/4 into my drains and used one of the 1" as a trickle flow. The other 1" is my return. Gate valves on the drains and some fine tuning and it is completely quiet. I upsized the pvc on either end of the 3/4 bulkhead to 1" and upsized the 1" return to 1.25"

Well the only reason I have the emergency drain is to fill that hole in the overflow because I only want to use 1 return from the sump to the tank. I only have 1 small pump inside the sump and I want to avoid running plumbing to both sides of the tank for a return.

Currently I have 1 normal drain and 1 emergency drain on the left and 1 normal drain and 1 return on the right but the standpipes are too tall in the overflow boxes so I need to redo it.

Just t off the return from the sump to the tank. I recommend doing that for more flow .

Yeah I know I could do that but the reason I didn’t want to is so I don’t have additional PVC piping running from the right side of the aquarium to the left since my sump is all the way to the right.

I have a slightly bigger version of what you have and I am doing all drains and bring my returns over the back like below in the video.
This way you have 4 drains. :)

I seen that but then you have stuff hanging over your tank and I’d prefer the nice clean look of nothing being attached to it.

Ok i gotcha. It does not bother me as I want to ensure I have enough flow and worry-free but I do understand your point.
I mean I currently don’t have any flow issues at the moment but it would make my plumbing under the tank a lot nicer and give me a lot more space and room if I used the left side as drains and right side as dual returns or single return.
Only issue I could think of is I’d probably have to clean the right side overflow more often due to no drains being there which isn’t a big deal.

Believe me I get it. Fix that beauty up to your liking. And please continue to post pics of your progression. What size is that sump?

That’s actually a google pic lol the sump I have is an eschopps, I think it’s like 30 or 40 gallons. I wish the tank had the black silicone but I got a great deal on everything from a friend so can’t complain haha. I’ll update with pics of my actual one when I fix up the plumbing.
