Hey all,

I’m considering getting some aqua forest liquid mysis to feed to my tank, clowns and nems mostly, and spot feed the starfish.

My only concern is that it’s garlic soaked mysis, is this okay for bubble tip nems and starfish to eat? Even for snails to clean up if any drops?

@OrionN may have further info abt garlic mysis and bubble tip nems?

If they don't like it they'll spit it out.

I'm not a fan of garlic, but I've never had it cause issues other than odor

I never use garlic for my tank.
Yea that’s my only worry, neither have I. Everyone eats readily at the moment. I just like the idea of having mysis that’s essentially ready to go straight out the fridge, rather than defrost, rinse, feed

I think of it like this:
Foods need some way to preserve it or it will spoil.
1. Live: Food can be preserver by staying alive, ie live food which is the best but expensive.
2. Dehydration: Dehydration is good Lots of dry food are good for the aquarium. Lots of fish do great on dry food. Some needs to be rehydrated before feeding.
3. Cold: Frozen food, need thaw out then feed.
4. Chemical preservative: This got to be really bad for the animals. A few years ago, there were a moisten food that does not need refrigeration. I caution my friend about it, he used it anyway and it cause his fish to go blind. I don think they sell this food anymore. All those chemical preservatives got to be bad for the animals. BTW, refrigeration alone cannot preserve food for long, a week or two. Even frozen cannot preserve food forever (in our freezer) so IMO, Aqua Forest Liquid Mysis got to have preservative in it, so not for my tank.

For me, food for the aquarium got to be fresh/live, dry or frozen. Nothing that stay unspoiled at room temperature and stay moist will go into my tank.

Ah that’s a really good point. I never thought of it that way, I guess it’s similar to food we’d consume in a way.

I’ll be avoiding it for now then. Probably best just to use frozen. It may take an extra 10min, but that’s nothing at the end of the day

My understanding is the salt content, garlic, and lack of oxygen preserves the mysis shrimp in the AF product. It’s a similar principal as old fashioned canning. Once it’s open and exposed to oxygen, definitely keep it in the fridge. I love the product and it’s especially nice to have around for other people to feed the tank while I’m away! As far as BTAs I’m not sure, but my corals and rock flower anemones seem to enjoy it. That said the shrimp are pretty small, and I feel like a BTA would like something a little bigger.

Lack of O2 is not a way to preserve food. There are plenty of anaerobic bacterial and fungus. It is not the salt either. It have to be really salty to preserve food. Sterilization and keep it close is one way to preserve the food. That is how canning works.
Botulism is one type of food poisoning that occurred when we can thing that is not completely sterilized.
I am not sure garlic extract can preserve thing
Apparently this liquid mysis sterilized their content. Once open then it need to be refrigerated

Garlic extract is anti-microbial. That plus the natural salt content of the shrimp, plus lack of o2, plus (I’m guessing they do this in some form) pasteurization are likely to be sufficient without chemical additives. Also the salt content of pickle brine is relatively low. Not saying they are pickling the shrimp, but that low salt content is sufficient to prevent the growth of dangerous bacteria. Anyways, the main point: you are able to can foods for long term preservation without artificial chemicals. Sterilization does need to occur, but typically that’s just done through heat.

It just something to think about. If you don’t know the mechanism of how certain food preserver the product from getting spoil, it would probably be safer to not put them in your tank. There is no product liability in pet food. It your pet died from it, it is too bad.

It s something I think about when I choose what I put in my tank. If it is not safe for me to eat it, then it would be hard press for me to put it into my tank. My fish food is safe for me to consume, but I don’t think I like to sauté mysis shrimp to eat with my rice. ;)

I think the best bet is just to avoid it, and take the extr time to feed frozen. Thanks all!
