I am nearing the end of my nitrogen cycle on my 180 gallon aquarium. I just picked up an aqua uv sterilizer 54 watt. 2 part question.
Question 1 since this is a bit overpowered for my 180 what pump should I hook up to this to help not only with clarification but also organisms like ich? How many gph or turnover would be recommended? The pump it came with was a tiny little marineland 400 and I know that will not work for what I need.

2nd question at what point should I start using the sterilizer? I am still dosing microbacter7 once a day and I don’t know if that has any negative effects.
Thank you

Go with the manufacturer recommended flow rate for what your goal is. The pump that came with it might be the correct size for it.

Recommended tank size for this sterilizer is 355 gallons. And the recommended flow is 1066 gph for sterilization. I have about 190 total gallons. So about 500-600 gph? This is my first go at a u.v. So I want to be sure.

The flow rate is not based on tank size, rather on dosage. For algae, use the lower end of the dosage (~3000 gph) for fish disease it is the higher dosage (1000 gph). Fish disease requires a higher dosage as it is a more complex organism, algae needs a lower dosage because it is a simpler organism. Algae benefits from fast turnover because it reproduces quickly.

I have a 36w UV on a 60g. I use a small 600gph DC pump on mine and control the flow. I mainly use it for blooms to clear up the water and don't run it 24/7. I don't think you're oversized, I had a 55w for my 180g.
