got a question and perhaps you will think i am crazy. I was planning a 40 breeder for the garage sort of a cross between frag tank and just a plane reef. I did not have this in mind but , i had all this excess stuff. I thought i was tradeing for a EV-120 could use a mag 9.5 to run it. When i went to look at the skimmer was not really paying much attention , the fellow entered the patent number on his ipad and i thought wow that is really cool. It took us to the site says ev120 . i was reading in the marine depot catalog, and thought gee i wonder why my skimmer has the foot print and height of that 240. Duh it is one , so good deal or not that is a big skimmer for a 40 breeder. question is if i were to put said mag 9.5 on this which is smaller than recommended what will happen , afraid it wont pull enough air. I could get a larger pump but it is huge for this size tank. i could put it on my 130 cube but i still have a skimmer that would be too big for the breeder. what gives if i use the smaller pump on the skimmer what happens or do you think i should try to trade it for a more appropriate sized skimmer.

I've used a Mag 9.5 on our EV240 for a while. Works as expected--good but obviously not as good as the Mag 18. I think you should be fine with the Mag 9.5.

Don't forget the EV series use an injector, and are much less dependent on the pump to "pull" air.

in a pinch i have an reeflo blow hole 1100 that i could use. i may just keep my ears open on the local boards to see when one pops up. By the way i see we are fairly close. probably have replied on mbrk

What exactly are you planning to put in the 40 breeder? If you're stuffing it with frags that you're feeding 8 cubes of food a day to, you can use the 240/mag 9 combo fine. Otherwise, you'll probably end up over-skimming.
