Should we all, at least for right now, strictly buy aquaculture? With the scrutiny on our hobby these days with reefs dying, would it be correct to say that if we stay out of the oceans for a while, that we’ll fly under the radar and people won’t claim that reefers are responsible for dying reefs. I’m just seeing a lot of bans through the years. We obviously play a negligible role in the destruction of reefs, but the public will think whatever they want to believe. Thoughts?

My thought process is to always purchase aquaculture specimens when they’re available over wild caught animals. When purchasing wild collected animals I do research and see if there’s any history of over collecting and also their expected survival in captivity. I prefer fish from Australia and Hawaii when possible due to regulations and short supply chain. For corals I only purchase aquacultured animals. I don’t think the state of aquaculture is to the point where we should stop wild collecting but I do think we hobbyists should make informed, conscious decisions. I also think our hobby should be a loud voice for aquacultured animals and show our support for marine conservation.

I agree with what has been mentioned. It's very possible to do entirely aquacultured, and you could have a pretty diverse tank. But there are a lot of communities out there that do rely on the fish trade for their livelihood. As long as those areas maintain proper collecting practices, then we can continue to support our oceans and other economies. I think the better thing is to concentrate on a proper QT method and education for those that are new. If we can prevent unneeded fish deaths, then that will be more helpful than not collecting properly.

I agree with all of you, but you know how outsiders can look at us. Look at what happened in Hawaii
