Aquaforest Reef Salt vs Probiotic Reef Salt

Hey Guys!
I'm thinking of changing from Red Sea products to Aquaforest (Coral Pro -> Either Probio or normal Reef Salt) and I'm wondering what the difference and benefits of the Probio salt is. Has anyone changed to Aquaforest salts and see some changes in how their coral react?
My tanks is also majority LPS/Softies/Zoas.

I have a mixed reef tank and have been using the AquaForest Reef Salt for almost a year. I love it. My coral have responded very well to the switch and I have been very impressed with the increase in growth and improved overall coral color. I did initially try the probiotic salt and soon realized it was way too much for my system and my tank's needs and quickly switched to the regular reef salt. Similarly, I would think that the reef salt would be more than adequate for your needs as the probiotic salt would be better suited for well established reefs that are heavily stocked with SPS colonies. I also used Red Sea Salt prior to switching over to AquaForest. Good luck!

Ah I see, Can you clarify what "way too much" for your system means? From what I read "Probiotic Reef Salt contains Probiotic bacteria, culture medium for them amino and vitamins" and I'm to be honest not 100% sure on what that means. I do see that most people that are using the pro bio are people with heavy SPS tanks as you said.

It's only been a week since I switched (Completely) but everything is looking good . I did 4 gallon water changes every week with the af reef salt. Everything is happy and fat!

In short, the probiotic salt contains probiotic bacteria, vitamin and amino acid in addition to reef salt and generally recommended for SPS heavy systems. As far pictures and other details concern please feel free to ask and you can also find a lot of information in this thread...

Probiotic bacteria is used to help bring down nitrate and phosphate. In conjunction with the probiotic salt most users will dose Pro Bio S and -NP Pro which is additional bacteria and food for bacteria. The reason why you see SPS users go this route is because they are trying to drive their nutrient levels as low as they can. Aminos and vitamins are for the health of the corals. If you have high nutrients then these will not be as readily consumed by the corals.

The regular reef salt will not include the bacteria, aminos or vitamins.

Hey there, I have been using the regular reef salt for about a year now and it is great.
Here is my take on the two:
Reef salt - If you will be mixing large amounts and storing for a long time
Probiotic - mix and use right a way.

In my opinoin the regular reef salt is perfectly fine and also less expensive

I made the switch from RSCP about 5-6 weeks ago. Went with the standard Reef salt. My corals have definitely perked up. My main reason for switching was to get away from the high Alk of the red sea. Very pleased. Mixes fast and clear. Also it's $10 cheaper at my LFS.

The difference is minor if you compare those 2. But reef salt comes little cheaper $3-5 for the same size and if you follow the whole thing including balling and probiotics from the same company it helps in maintaining homogeneity in the system. But I believe if you go into more details for each element you may find more variations.

It's a great salt overall and I do use it for a very long time. But just want a little lower Alk and Ca in my mix. So thinking to switch to AF or Red Sea ...

What about Tropic marin Pro? It has low alkalinity and Ca but it also contain the highest amount of Potassium in the business.

Most zeo users use Redsea blue bucket, alk, cal and mag mix similiar to sea water.

Aquaforest reef salt is a great product. As I am sure the Red sea is also. Get a list of the trace elements that are in each and compare. Should be listed on the manufacturers website I think. Then pick what suits your needs. The Probiotic is for aquaforest ULNS as it contains those supplements.
