Do they replace the trace elements that get depleted over time say if toy don't do water changes?

Amino acids build protein and they are no where related to trace elements of tank.

Ok so just out curiosity, what needs to happen to not have to do water changes?

If you use AF then water changes are recommended for running healthier reef, you can do twice a month or once but you still do.
