Starting a new 90gal reef was thinking about the AquaMaxx Q-3 skimmer for it any thoughts? What would you go with?

That's a big 8" body for a 90g tank... Look for something with a 6" body

With sump it will be 125 gal so more is better right?
No, not necessarily. If it's a 90g tank with a sump it'll have less than 100g of water. That's just too much skimmer and it won't work half the day.

Just saw a BRS video yesterday that explains this well...

90 tank trigger Ruby 36 sump 34.5gal so total water is less that 100gal? I thought it would be 125gal total water volume please explain if I’m wrong?

Really depends how heavy a bioload you’ll have. Also what additional export methods if any ie refug., Cheto reactor, algae scrubber etc. the Q2 might work nicely it’s rated up to 130gallon.

Was looking at that be does going bigger hurt anything? Rather go bigger and if I upgrade tank I will have a skimmer already

Get the Aqua Maxx EM 200 or the Bubble Magnus Curve , bigger is not always better. So if i hooked up my 40 breeder DT to my 240 gallon sump, then I would have 280 gallons and I would need which kind of skimmer?? The 240 gallons dilutes the 40 gallon tank.

Ok now I’m starting to understand so you by the skimmer foR the size of the tank not total water volume of system. started first tank 1 year ago still learning. So if I’m understanding right AquaMaxx Q2 or BM curve 7 would be a good For 90gal tank?

Both would be very good, their perfect size tank is about 120 gallons. So they are both a little oversized but are well balanced.

i have a q3 on a 120 and its perfect. Its a little big on a 90 but it's not so oversized that it wouldnt skim consistently

Went with the AquaMaxx Q2 couldn’t beat it for the sale price! Thanks for all advice hope it works out. Would have love to get the Nyos 120 just couldn’t pull the trigger for the cost. Had to save money for live rock lol

Nyos is ridiculously priced. Nothing the Aquamaxx can't so that the Nyos will. Good call imo.

How are you liking the Aquamaxx?
I think it is perfectly sized for a 120, the build quality is not the best though. The neck separated from the body and i had to super glue it back together. The pump is pretty solid. Been running for four years with only the neck problem.

Overall its a really great performer. I'm sure it does just as well or better than any of the expensive brands, but you can definitely tell the materials and build quality isn't on par with higher end skimmers.
