I just bought a medium sized denitrator used. It did not come with a pump or syringe to inject bacteria? I have no idea how to use this. Can anyone shed some light on this for me please? I read that you have to dose vodka weekly? Or is that for the older model?

I bought one when I first started. Maybe a year in. $ 250. Yes vodka. And it never helped. Garbage 2 years later:-( glad to say nitrates are at 0 now. With only a sump refuge, skimmer and carbon. My problem was not enough plants in fuge, dead spots that collect debris in display, and over feeding. I feed my well stocked tank once every two days. A capful of marine snow and a cube of mysis. Tank is running better than ever in 8+ years.

I also just got one used. Send a email to the guy and he will respond to you question. Their site has anything you need to get it running again. Some have had good results with it, I am going to at least try it before not using it.

Watch THIS video. You don't really need to inject bacteria. The bacteria in your tank will eventually populate the filter.....just might take a bit longer.

You inject vodka (or sugar water) into the port on the unit. As the video shows, twice a week in the beginning, and once a week after the unit cycles (about a month or so). Testing your nitrate level will eventually determine your vodka dose amount. HERE's their website that might answer more of your questions.

There should be a port at the top where you would inject it. I use vinegar instead as it is supposed to influence different bacteria that will do more for po4 and still help with no3. I've had good results for the past 2 years running these as my main (if not only) source of nutrient export. I do grow caulerpa in my fuge but I doubt it does much since I barely harvest.

To inject, you would use a standard 10ml or 5ml syringe. I run size small denitrators, and inject about 5ml on wednesdays and saturdays. Thats about max dosage according to the owner who suggests 4ml per week. I set an alarm on my cell to remind me, but not a big deal if you forget sometimes.

That is the injection port. I guess if it has been down for some time it will take some time to cycle. I used bacteria in a bottle the guy sells on his site and it works in no time to start you off.

I have a large unit on my 200 gal fish tank. Does a very good job at keeping nitrates in check with heavy feedings.

Also hove the Med unit on my 80 gal fish/coral tank. Has done a great job at keeping the numbers at a desired level. Took me about 2 months to really start to see the numbers start to come down. I still dose twice a week on both units. I'm dosing Vodka. Should i think about trying Vinegar?

What email did you use? I just tried to send him a message through his site and I received an error saying the email was undeliverable.

I searched my mail and that is the email I used as well. Not sure why yours didn't go through.

Thanks. I placed an order but didn't get a confirmation so was concerned. Always am when that happens. I'll try calling him tomorrow.
