Aquarium City Red Milli

This red/pink Acropora millepora has a very bright pigmentation and has a history being maintained within one of the more prominent captive reefs. The reef Aquarium store 'Aquarium City' in Canoga Park, California is a reef meca for reefers in the San Fernando Valley. For years they have grown exotic stony corals in their main display reef. This reef was featured in the Mike Paletta TFH Microcosms Book, Ultimate Marine Aquariums (pg 94-96). One of their very exotic corals has been a bright red, sometimes bright pink Acropora millepora. Visiting aquarist paid a premium price for a fragment of this coral. Unfortunately the store lost the main colony about 1 to 2 years ago. An advanced reef aquarist from Southern California (Ali Atapour) acquired a fragment of this coral just a few months prior to the store losing its colony. About 6 months later Ali gave his fragment to reeffarmers.com for safe keeping (thanks Ali and we owe you one). The fragment at reeffarmers.com did not grow much after we harvested our first captive offspring from it. Apparently it was fragged too early (we have been known to frag some very small parent colonies). In the past few months however it has started to grow very well. We refer to this coral as the 'Aquarium City Red millepora'. Its coloration in our reefs is bright red/pink. It is about as red as an Acropora can get. Polyps are extended during the day and they have a reddish and transparent color to them. Everyone who has seen this coral has wanted a frag and a group of these people have gotten on a local pre-Limited Edition listing. The coral is being initially listed with its first 7 months already reserved for reeffers located from San Diego, the High Desert, Canoga Park and even Redding. Steve Tyree is maintaining this coral for reeffarmers.com in one of his 125 gallon naturally filtered Tri-Zonal EG Reef Aquariums. In Steve's captive reef the coral is positoned at about 19 inches from a 400 watt 20,000 K Radium Metal Halide that was about 7 months old in November 2003. The coloration of the coral is easily maintained within this reef. Water current is moderate. Price is currently $80 per small sized fragment. Please note - We raised the price on June 8th to $80 per small fragment. This is mainly because the coral has experienced only a slightly wider captive distribution while demand has experienced a strong increase. The monthly limited edition reservation schedules can be found below. Please note effective May 2009 we have changed the harvesting and reservation schedule to bimonthly. This better matches the corals long term growth rate in captivity.
